how do i know what to choose?
i got a PS3, and will be receiving a 360 next fortnight.
but if i was gonna buy a game and its available on both formats, how do i know which one is the better one to choose to buy?

Read the reviews. That's what I do, and almost always end up buying the 360 version

If the game can be played online then I'd go for the version my mates would use most.
