Default Tip on being the boss of your PC pls!

All of a sudden I am no longer master of my own PC!!!

I never had to logon before, just booted straight to desktop, but now I have to click a 'Diesel' button. Total nuisance when you go for a cuppa over a restart, and now this.

I tried permitting Diesel to install drivers in the admin tool, but really I just want back to one logon as main God admin.

How do I do that guys?

Thx

Has the administrator account (default local admin account that is always created) got a password set on it? If not, set one.

You can set passwords and still get it to auto login without the need to type it

If it's connected to the Internet in anyway then set passwords (especially the administrator one). It's another hoop that someone has to jump through if they want to gain control of / hack your PC so well worth doing

It's quite common the problem you are having. The reason the admin account is not shown is for security. If you set a password on the admin account it will auto login as your diesel account. I will see if I can dig out the Microsoft document.

Cheers Dar, and all. I know it is not that unusual and that you IT prof's know about it. Bloody nightmare halfway through a video project that Windows decides they aint your files anymore though - ACCESS VIOLATION. As you say common...

Vista business 64 handles this chestnut better methinks - bite t' bullet once I have a few days between jobs...

Thanks guys - I was bricking it but the regedit worked. Autologon as Diesel works great. Howwever I still cant install the b video flash card drivers that I need. Ridiculous!!

I think its down to not being logged on as THE proper God admin - only Diesel with Admin priviliges?

This pops up when I go to add an admin password as you suggest.
It scared me!!! Is it a good thing to add an admin password and then logon always and only as this?

Cheers

Bump - still terrified. Still haven't been able to load these drivers.

Will I really risk being locked out if I add a password for admin and use this as the main account thereafter?

Cheers

very unlikely to loose anything -- especially as you have never used the admin account

although it is strange that you do not have sufficient user rights if you are a member of the local admins group, unusual for rights to be given specifically to the admin user rather than the admin group

Yeah - Diesel is def part of the admin group that has 'full rights'. I even checked the sub-menu regarding who can load drivers whether they are signed or not and added Diesel there...

Hmmmm. Looks like its Vista upgrade time with ONLY admin as an user.

Really fancy buying a small solid state memory OS drive - my other drives are all RAID 0 media drives...

Ahh, and all the "windows requires your permission to continue - ok/Cancel" boxes that comes with it.

And throughout all that, the default administrator account isn't a full admin account (thats been disabled and hidden away). All can be remedied quite easily though (disable UAC and enable the "real" admin account )
