Yup got this today, it's an absolute bargain.

Remind me again why PC gaming is such good fun

Half Life 2 Lost Coast = runs without an issue
Half Life 2 = will not run, gets to the title screen then hangs, blue screen and then reboots

updated drivers, no effect, what a pile of ***** bollocks

installing team fortress 2 now, to see if that will play

Lost Coast was an independant 1 level demo show casing the engines new lighting and dynamics where as ep1 & 2 are integral to the game so i suspect if HL2 is having issues then so will these, can't say as i've ever had issues playing from all those years back when it first came out up until the latest episode. It was one of the few games which actually ran like a dream on my piece of crap pc, hats off to valve for actually spending time optimising their engine.

Is it anything to do with it trying to check authenticity from steam when you try to play the game ? (firewall issue, virus checker?)

just tried HL2 again

loaded up and after you select "new game" it goes to start the game, and the computer then resets, you then have the disk checking stuff, and when windows finally loads back up, it tells me that its recovered from a serious error

things i have tried so far

updated 9700pro ATI drivers (latest ones installed)
updated directx files
swearing at it

wondering if the steam downloads of hl2 and ep1 were somehow corrupt ?
