Default Installing extra RAM on a laptop

Got our Lenovo R400 delivered yesterday - works very well even if it's very un-ponsey looks wise.

We had a DoA SL300 delivered two weeks ago so sent it back but kept the extra 1GB of RAM we ordered (thinking they'd send another SL300) but they had run out of stock - we ended up keeping the RAM for free.

The R400 has a 2GHz dual core processor (Intel) and 2GB of RAM - this will up it to 3GB.

Looked at the instructions and although I'm sure I can do it okay, it does look a bit fiddly and I don't want to trash anything. Any tips for avoiding static that are practical (e.g. not building an anti static room/table or wearing a funny suit)? Is it relatively easy to do? Does it stuff up a warranty?

Thanks!

Very easy to do. Just need to follow the instructions that are in the manual for upgrading. I beleive most notebooks will have a trap door underneath the casing where the RAM goes. As a tip make sure you only touch the edges of the RAM module. The RAM can only be fitted one way round and takes 30 seconds to do. As for static discharge you can either ground yourself with an anti-static wrist strap to something like a radiator, or if no wrist starp just make sure you do this where you can just touch something on occassion like a radiator to ground and dis-charge any static build up.
Once the RAM is in the PC's BIOS will detect it staright away and windows may change the Swap file settings on the hard drive.

jpor - you're a star!
The instructions basically say take four screws out of the bottom, remove the palm rest, slot in the RAM then reverse the process but I'm the sort that could easily get it wrong.

Will do it at the weekend.

Looks like the DIMM slots for this model are under the palm rest. All the info here.
If you're lucky the R400 will have shipped with a single 2GB chip so job's a good 'un. If not, then it'll have been shipped with a pair of 1GB chips and you'll not be able to use the extra memory stick.

chances are you will have 2 1gb sticks in there (seems to be cheaper buying memory that way), it will either be easy to do or difficult. Easy is remove panel and populate empty slot, difficult will be remove panel and see only 1 slot and finding out the other slot is on the otherside of the motherboard as per my father in law when he bought a laptop from pc world

I doubt very much there will be 1 x 2Gb RAM. What you'll probably find when you get the case open is that both RAM slots are already occupied with 1Gb each

Unfortunately, with the Lenovo Notebooks, you have to take away the whole palm rest to upgrade/exchange the memories.
