Default Dell laptops - any good?

Erm...bit late to be asking this since I've just built and bought one online, but thought I'd see what everyone thought of them anyway.

So who has a dell laptop? And has it met your expectations?

I've always thought highly of dell(not their call centres though - IIRC they are a nightmare). I have owned my desktop for 6 years + though, and it's been faultless.

I have had a Dell laptop, bought new, since last spring.
The only problem I had with it was poor wireless connection, but that turned out to be the router at fault.
I did have a pc 'expert' in to look at my desktop to sort a problem out. While he was around I asked him about the internet connection problem with the Dell.
He said, 'Bloody load of rubbish they are mate. I should know I'm a Dell partner!'
Well he didn't fix the Dell, and he didn't fix the desktop either.

Some expert

Other than that it's been a great little machine.

I've had 3 Dell laptops, and they have all been excellent machines. Reliable, quick, and good value for your money.

Bought the wife an inspirion 1300 18 months ago

the DVD drive failed twice, both replaced next day under warranty (within 30 days of ownership)

and just before chrimbo the battery died, and in the process of not replacing

the battery, we fritzed the charger. lol

a replacement battery & charger and were up & running

I got my son a Studio 15 from the Dell Outlet centre for his Christmas. This is the first Dell I've bought, but I have to say it's a nice looking machine.
Dell did mess up the order initially, but they upgraded the warranty from 1 year return to base to 3 year in home for free.

Dave.

Good to hear they sort things when they do go wrong.
Disappointing when something breaks on you but no one can expect 100% reliability and I think it's how they deal with those that define a good company.
A few years ago, I had to buy batches of PCs in 20 in or more so there would often be at least one in a batch with a problem and the likes of Dell and Gateway were always much better at customer service than the others.

Sorry don't mean to hijack...

RRH - did you get the 6 cell or 9 cell battery? I just checked Dell's website and it says that the 9 cell battery sticks out the back by 3cm!?!?!

Thanks

Andy

The delivery company(Walsh Western) operates in quite a strange way, and as a result of that I still havn't recieved my Laptop: even though it was built and sent for delivery by Dell last week.

- See my thread in Non Scooby Related if you're interested.

When I got my last one, it was an automated call which just told me when they were going to deliver it. If I wanted a different delivery time/date I had to contact them. Ordered, built, and delivered within 3 days of placing the order
