ISP speed question - thinking of changing
I've been with Nildram for 9 years now and have been happy with the speed and service - but recently my download speed during the day is pretty poor (<100 KB/S) - but late at night or early in the morning that runs around 600 KB/S - so it's not the connection - must be either conjestion at the exhange (a check says there isn't though) or speed throttling by the ISP (they won't admit that). Usually doesn't bother me as I have Newsleecher on a sheduled download from midnight, so it doesn't count against the 'fair usage' quota - but there are times during the day when I want to grab something quickly (i.e. trying to get UFC 92 at the mo) and the speed is peeing me off.
My question is, will another ISP offer the same speeds as it's just using the same lines, or could I see a speed increase during the day? Guess it will come down to whether Nildram are throttling the line.
Anyone else changed ISP for this reason and had a good result?
Cheers
Richard.

Yep I went from Plusnet who were throttling everything in sight most of the time to NewNet, which is a completely throttle free connection. They do have a monthly cap in place, but you can have whatever level you want as long as you pay for it. I'm on a 4.5mbit connection to the exchange and regularly see 450-500Kb/s constantly any time of the day. They also provide 24mbit connections if your exchange is unbundled.

I see the same thing quite often. Don't use it all day. Get home from work and I've seen it as low as 1mb. Look again around midnight and it's running at 20mb. It is intermittent however (doesn;t happen every day) and seems to sort itself out. I did try ringing Virgin about it a while ago, but gave up after sitting on hold for nearly an hour.
Having said that, it has been a lot better the last couple of weeks or so...
