Default Who here understands Google very well indeed? I need an opinion.

I am in talks with my SEO about the optimization of my www.evolutionchips.com websites and we have been looking at specifically optimising one of my pages for:

Turbo Diesel Tuning

Turbo Diesel Remap

Now when I type those into Google, i don't get much relating to me.
Please try for yourself on www.google.co.uk

Yet he says we are well optimized and provides this link as proof:
http://www.google.com/search?as_q=turbo+diesel+tuning&num=50&hl=en&ie=UT F-8&oe=UTF-8&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&as_ ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&a s_sitesearch=&safe=images

Clicking it sees us well listed on page one and the search term looks correct, so I am interested to know what all the code in the link is doing as i think its narrowing the search down a LOT which is NOT what Joe Bloggs will be doing.

Any advice appreciated as I am a very proficient with Google Adwords but cant put my finger on what they have done here to artificially improve listings, which is what I'm sure they have done.

Google.com and google.co.uk list your website differently.

I realise that. But my point is, if we open up a fresh www.google.co.uk and type in Turbo diesel tuning

Then open up his link in a seperate page, he appears to also be searching Turbo diesel tuning but we are listed on page 1 in his link, but not on our own searches from a fresh google search.

Heya, sorry, I'm new here..

They have done some SEO work, as you're currently the 8th (on that link you posted) 10th (when I type it in myself) result whenever someone searches. Note that's on google.com, not .co.uk.

For .co.uk, you're mentioned somewhere in the first few pages, but it's not your site. Your site also doesn't seem to be on the first few pages of results.

The sponsored searches at the top, and to the right, are to do with adwords, and they always seem to show your site, which is a good thing.

The following link will help you find out exactly what the full URL means:
Google search URLs revealed or How to create your own search URL Our Picks - News, articles and reviews

Hope I helped :P

I'm no expert on web design and placement but i have managed to get my website at number 2 on google if you type 'track day cameras' and number five if you type 'track day cameras'.

Firstly it looks at your URL, and if turbo diesel tuning is in your url say www.turbo-diesel-tuning.com then it willl come up, then put it in the 'title' tag, then finally your content.

Like i said no expert but ask the guy who i sent you a PM about as he really knows his stuff.

cheers

That has quite a bit to do with it, but then you knew that

Correct

The example you have been given is using .com as its report method, there as yours will be .co.uk

If you are using IE, then use the search facility in the toolbar itself, this points at goolge.com.

However a .com result is great if you want that but the majority of people who use google in the uk will be resolved to .co.uk, type in google.com and you will be redirected.

As for all the stuff in the URL, most I dont know, but some relates to the number of results shown per page.

Also the number of results shown is more in .co.uk than .com

716,000 .co.uk
715.000 .com

Did your SEO not ask what your target market is?

Thanks everyone.

Yes Mike, they know full well what the market is and I dont think they are doing a great Job. Adwords i understand fully and i spend upwards of £3K per month on them with great success and have all my keywords rating 9 or 10 without fail, but this particular link he sent me was a little baffling until i reliased i was being redirected without noticing. I will get back onto him and ask why the hell I am well optimised for .com and not .co.uk

Thanks for your help folks.

It would appear your site isn't hosted in the UK which would contribute to poor uk rankings.

I'm no SEO expert btw

If I'm reading this right, you want to know what these mean

&num=50
&hl=en
&ie=UTF-8
&oe=UTF-8
&btnG=Google+Search
&as_epq=
&as_oq=
&as_eq=
&lr=
&as_ft=i
&as_filetype=
&as_qdr=all
&as_occt=any
&as_dt=i
&as_sitesearch=
&safe=images

and if adding them is helping your SEO bod to have you higher in the list than joe public would find you thereby justifying his fee...?

Here's a bit of info:

&hl=en (language)
&num=10 (number of results [10,20,30,50,100])
&btnG=Google+Search (to do with hitting enter or pressing search button, not sure exactly what)
&as_epq= (complete phrase)
&as_oq= (at least one)
&as_eq= (excluding)
&lr= (language results. [lang_countrycode])
&as_ft=i (filetype include or exclude. [i,e])
&as_filetype= (filetype extension)
&as_qdr=all (date [all,M3,m6,y])
&as_nlo= (number range, low)
&as_nhi= (number range, high)
&as_occt=any (terms occur [any,title,body,url,links])
&as_dt=i (restrict by domain [i,e])
&as_sitesearch= (restrict by [site])
&as_rights= (usage rights [cc_publicdomain,cc_attribute,cc_sharealike,cc_nonc ommercial,cc_nonderived]
&safe=images (safesearch [safe=on,images=off])
&as_rq= (similar pages)
&as_lq= (pages that link)
&gl=us (2-digit country code in lowercase)

All that stuff ^^ is added automatically when you do an advanced search.

All it looks like he's done through the advanced search is select 50 search results instead of the standard amount.

The URL you posted to .com isnt making any difference to your search position, you are just not listed that well on .co.uk compared to .com

You need to speak to your SEO about this as most browsers in the UK are automatically redirected to .co.uk unless the user specifically selects .com, which is in the bottom right corner of this page Google

You are about 90'th and 70'th on the .co.uk search list for the keywords you gave

Your HTML is ok but could be a little better IMHO.

Personally I would:

Get the javascript out into other files
Meta stuff is a bit of a waste but I'd still have a meta title=""
Remove HTML when CSS could be used i.e on IMG tags height="" width=""
or better still remove images, and replace with H1 or H2 tags with the kewords/text and using background images
Try and cross link between pages in the site.
Try and get links from other sites to you using keywords in the link text

Just my initial 2ps worth...

Rich

Thanks guys, it seems clear to me now that for some odd reason we are first page on .com but nowhere on .co.uk. I must admit i suspected foul play but it seems there is none in use.

I will call them tomorrow and have it out with them as they have been at this for 6 months and its wearing thin as I wanted to decrease my adwords expenditure over winter and enjoy organic and reasonably cheap traffic.

I'm a part time website rater for Google.
The search engines entries are getting less and less automated, so the usual tricks don't work any more.
High ranking sites have their rank based on usefulness or being classed as vital results for a search.
Your site would be rated as vital for "Evolution Chips", but just relevant/slightly relevant for "Turbo Diesel Remap" etc.
You would get a much better rating on the site if you offered the ability to buy products on line.

A basic tip:
Similarities between keyword and description tags are seen as spam, move "turbo, diesel, tuning" to the end of the keywords tag away from the beginning.

For anyone who is thinking of asking... no, I do not get to pick the sites I rate.
I cannot be bribed, which is a shame.

I applied to a company called LionBridge in Ireland and went through a short test and then a 270 question exam.
