We use an external company, Iron Mountain. They hold all our weekly/monthly and annual backup tapes. Once a week, they collect the tapes we just used and deliver the ones we need next.

We also keep the current backup at another office location (in a safe) our internal courier takes that and swaps it with the one already offsite. These are transported in a secure strong case.

The remainder are kept in a locked fireproof onsite safe, for security reasons.

With IM they'll generally be stored in climate controlled areas under Argonite gas.

A lot of security firms used to use a cheapskate method of storing at other branches eg. (3 branches) branch 1 sends to 2, 2 sends to 3, 3 sends to 1.

Not many companies or government offices use the method now though, because if you lose the data it's your own fault, better to have someone else to blame

Vastly improved since its takeovers of numerous other businesses. Massively improved security, technology, logistics and regulations.

No, its a fair comment and familiar customer feedback from back then; something they've been focussed on correcting. Its been a hard transition unifying the business and I think you'd notice a marked improvement now

We used to use Iron Mountain when I did the tape backups for my company.

Never had a problem with them.

We use IM too, never had any problems with them.

As for best practice we have daily backups which are stored off-site for 3 days and a weekly backup that is stored for 2 weeks and that seems to work well.

I looked at IM for our offsite storage but picked Data Protect in the end as the copurier costs were less.
