Will PC133U memory work in place of PC100?
I am upgrading the memory on my Thinkpad T20 (yes old laptop I know) from 256 to 512, so I am replacing the 2x128's with 2x256's.
However, I have been sent PC133U memory and not PC100 (ie whats in the laptop at the moment.
Will that work ?
Also - there are 2 memory slots - 1 of the new chips looks like it will fit ok (lines up with the notch) but the other doesn't line up with the notch.
I rang them and they said "turn the chip over so the notch lines up)
Never heard of this before.
So 2 questions - will PC133 fit / work in place of PC100, and secondly, will one of the chips work / be accepted, when its put in upside down ?
Cheers,
Ro.

It should be fine. The 133 indicates the speed it can work up to. Not necessarily the speed it runs at.
If you check the crucial site it indicates that the T20 will accept PC133
Memory chips don't really have a right way up and an upside down. If you're going by the sticker then it could be on either side of the stick. Just flip it over and stick it in.

Crisis !
I installed both new chips (one "upside down")
Re-started and checked and system seemed to register the new 512 total memory.
Then started to get error messages and laptop started to shut IE down and other problems.
Decided to re-install Windows (was going to do this anyway) and couldn't because through the install kept getting dozens of error messages and also install would freeze up on me.
So I removed the memory, re-installed the old memory and installed Windows XP again and no problem, installed cleanly. So all is well again, but laptop is back to where it was with 256 memory !
So maybe the memory is faulty or installing upside down was bad?
I take it both these are the same memory :
IBM ThinkPad T20 (Type 2647) - Memory ( RAM ) Upgrade from Orca Logic Ltd
Computer memory upgrades for IBM ThinkPad T20 Series (Type 2647) Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com
Just wondered why one is £49 per 256 and the other £23 ?

Not all memory is the same. I void generic cheap memory modules.
I almost always use Crucial - Ive had 2 bad modules and Ive bought hundreds both personally and with work over the last few years.
There isnt really an upside down for memory modules - quite often with laptops you'll get a connecter than is the opposite way around to the other (space constraints)
My best advice is but your laptop in Crucial and buy what it says!

Definitely sounds like 1 or both of your new memory chips is faulty.
Try putting just one of the new memory chips and see if the problems re-occur. If they do then put the other new memory chip in. Hopefully you just have 1 faulty chip and not 2.
If you're going to buy new memory chips then definitely go for Crucial.

Thanks chaps - I did ground myself - and used an anti-static strip thing to be safe.
Pretty sure one or both chips are faulty, so they are going straight back and I will be buying from crucial (which I should have done in the first place)
Cheers
