Default Data recovery from memory stick

My partner has just lost four months of work on a newly purchased memory stick from Bennets Electrical store. When the stick is inserted into the usb slot nothing comes up on the computer. She has tried it on several others and the same happens. It appears that there is a loose connection or fault. Is there any way or place that it can be sent to to recover the data on there. I know that there are many data recovery places, but can they recover data from the stick even though nothing can be read? Any help would be much appreciated!

Great, thanks for that, have downloaded a copy. I suspect though (having not yet seen the stick) that it is a physical connection problem and not a software problem

If you pull the thing out while it is still writing, it can throw up some odd errors the next times you plug it in. Usually it will say that the thing is connected but empty, but this might be what is happening here.

The biggest culprit after hardware failure is the drive letter assignment issue mentioned in the link. We get this regularly at work, people plug in a USB drive, Blackberry, Ipod and all of a sudden they can't access a network drive because the device has pinched an existing drive letter, or they just don't see the device at all. You can use the utility in the link or follow the instructions here. Just don't change your C:\ drive by accident.
