windows/bootcamp question - MAC guys!!
Quick question.
I want to install either XP pro or Vista onto my Mac (since the demise of my PC!)
However, will I be able to install it onto my Firewire drive using Bootcamp beta?
Thanks

Hi Dan,
My initial response would be "No", because from what I recall XP will restart the USB/Firewire drivers during boot, which means you'd never get booted up
Having said that, have a read of this thread, as there are some suggestions there which might allow you to do it.

My reading of that is that you've at least got to ar$e about with the HD.... too much like hard work!!
What about Vista? Same deal?

OK - I've spent all day (off & on) backing up my MBP
Just had a thought though - I'm running 10.4.11 and the Boot Camp I've got is the Beta......
Is this going to work, or should I just wait and get Leopard?

Boot Camp Assistant will complain it's expired, you'd need to set your machines clock back to allow it to run (Try setting it to Feb 2007 - make sure you disable the automatic date and time sync). Also make sure you burn the drivers to disk (should be an option in the Boot Camp Assistant for this)

OK
I haven't done a full backup, as whilst in FW Target mode and copying over, the finder stated that certain files required special permissions to be copied, and wouldn't be copied.....
Is there a way around this?
Failing that, I've copied over my files (Itunes etc), and if the **** hits the fan, I'll just lose my apps (I can always re-install! )
Finally, I'm going to put on Vista Business (my XP disk is pre SP1 ) - when the BootCamp makes the driver disk, I'm hoping that they'll be compatible..... or not?
Thanks

It'll probably be files whose ownership are set to root:wheel, which you, even as admin, don't have access to.
I should have thought to suggest this earlier, but using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Net Restore Helper might have been a good idea, as you'd have been able to just take a clone of the complete drive.
You could try logging in as root (jump into terminal and issue the command: sudo passwd root then enter your admin password, then enter and verify the password you want for the root user, then logout and login with username of root and password of whatever you just set it to.

Yeh, I've tried CCC before with little success. I've been using SuperDuper! which is a fantastic little package BUT it does wipe the entire destination drive (something that I don't want!)
The version of Boot Camp beta is well, LOL, I've just installed it, and it won't even run!! But it's 1.0.1
Can't use 10.5's Bootcamp - not running 10.5

any thoughts on whether 1.0.1 will do Vista drivers?
I've got Bootcamp to run, but I'm not going to execute it just yet (for obvious reasons!)
Cheers,

Dan,
After a quick search, Boot Camp 1.1.2 had the drivers for Vista, so I doubt 1.0.1 has them
Do you have a 10.5 DVD? If so, you should be able to stick it in the Mac after you have installed Vista and it'll pick up the ISO9660 partition on the DVD (it's a hybrid disk) and the drivers within will work with vista.
If you don't have a 10.5 DVD then PM me as I've got a zip file of them and we'll work out the best way to get it over to you.

I've got a MacPro restore disk (not specifically 10.5) will this work?
Can probably buy a copy to try I've got 15 Macs still on 10.4.11 - haven't taken the plunge to 10.5 yet.....
I can also try a Torrent, but would prefer an original anyway!!

forgot to say - thanks for the update. Looks like I'll have to leave it until next week then. I've got as far as I can (but it will work then)

No the MacPro disk won't help, as you need a 10.5 disk, be it the restore one that came with the machine or a retail copy of 10.5. The reason is the 10.5 DVD is a hybrid HFS+/ISO9660 disk and the drivers for Boot Camp 2 are on the ISO9660 partition. I did have a dig in the Boot Camp Assistant app in 10.5, which does include a DiskImage.dmg file, but it's not the latest drivers, which seems a tad silly.
As said, if you want the drivers from the 10.5 disk, give me a shout (PM/Email)
