The iPhone 2.1 firmware will be released on Friday, it's only currently available for the iPod Touch. As for a jailbreak, it'll probably be a few days before the Pwange team have a jailbreak for it.

I just got the iPhone 2G and managed to download WinPWN and Jailbreak the phone with 2.02.

It didn't quite go to plan as it doesn't like iTunes version 8 very much, but with a bit of faffing about it is fine.

So I am happily surfing and playing with Vodafone.

When you mention iTunes 8, are you talking about running it on Vista? If so then I've read a few reports saying it'll blue screen machines when you plug an iPod in (think it'll also do it if you plug in an iPhone). Not at all impressed by that, seems like Apple should have perhaps tested it before release.

Just tried my video Ipod on my Vista machine with Itunes 8 and it works ok. I do remember a few updates ago though when Itunes managed to disable my internet connection. Seems Apple have a history of not properly testing Itunes before they release it.

I'm running Vista 64 bit and iTunes 8. It works fine.

It is the WinPWN software that can't quite complete. After putting the iPhone into DFU mode, the iPhone 'crashes' and so does WinPWN.

If you reboot everything, load iTunes and plug in the iPhone you can still restore the hacked firmware and it works.

I had a mild heart attack the first time as I thought I managed to break the iPhone!

Hey Steve,

Do the itunes processes appear as 64 bit apps on your machine. Even thought I downloaded the 64bit installer, it appears the processes are all 32bit. Not sure if its because I orig had 32bit 7.x on for a while......

What's the point of doing the jailbreak?

The reason for me is that I do not have on O2 contract, so it releases the network lock.

In addition you can run unsigned code (i.e. applications that are not authorised by Apple). I don't really use this feature, although I did load the Nintendo emulator.

Oh I see. I can only get O2 where I live, so no real need for me I guess.

Just to add something additional to what Steve said, for iPhone 2G users, you can jailbreak/unlock the iPhone. Jailbreak means you can run non Apple endorsed applications on the phone. Unlock removes the carrier/network lock, so you will not be tied to O2 if you're in the UK. For iPhone 3G users the tool would only jailbreak the phone, as a software unlock method has not yet been found for the iPhone 3G. I'm not sure if there is a hardware unlock available, perhaps with a turboSIM.
