Hi there,

I am looking to move from Mac OS 9.2.2 to X (whichever the latest version on sale in the Apple store is). I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the following devices I use are supported:

- Agfa Snapscan 1212u (Agfa's site seems to have drivers)
- Kodak DC280 digital camera (should be natively supported?)
- Alcatel USB ADSL modem, BT Openworld green thing
- Palm running Palm OS 3, connected by USB

I suspect that I'm OK with all of these, the major doubt being the ADSL modem as if I can't use that there's not much point converting yet.

Also, do people think my machine is up to it, it's a slot loading iMac DV with 1Gb RAM (I got silly in the memory shop!) and a 10Gb hard drive, of which 5.5Gb is currently available.

BTW - reason for going to Mac OS X is that it'll allow me to work more from home.

Believe it or not I think I can almost answer about the ADSL modem. Just after the 1.4 drivers came out someone asked the same question here at work and the answer was NO. Apparently the drivers only work up to version 9.

Simon (no, rebooting into 9.2.2 to use ADSL is not an option!!!).

Ok then, so what about upgrading the MAC to OS X, then having a second MAC on OS 9 and a wireless connection between them. Use a wireless ADSL router and internet connection sharing software then connect to the internet from the second machine whilst running OS X on the first

Shouldn't cost more than a grand all in.

Or not bother for a month and buy a quick shift instead!

If anyone knows if this modem can be made to work under OS X I'd be very interested, as I want to be able to fiddle with things at home that absolutely require broadband and OS X, one without the other isn't good enough.

palm will work OK through USB. I think that palm have just finished writing a full macosX one..

as for the camera and scanner, go to www.apple.com and look at the iphoto page. This will list all the camera;s / scanning devices that are currently supported by iphoto. I think that there is a newer list, I just plugged in my sony into the ibook and it worked straight away, but my other camera ( a ricoh i-500) needs macos9 drivers, and they have not releases any macosx stuff yet!

Question for you is, what apps are you planning to use?

I simply ask we have not gone to X, well apart from dev machines, as the apps we use are not written for X yet and we'd have to use classic, which kinda defeats the reason for running X.

I've played with X and it does look nice, but personally I can't see it offering me anything over and above 9.2.2

Just curious as to why it will allow you to work from home more.

Hi there,

Apps I use to maintain the website www.crudworks.org are simply:

- BBEdit
- Fetch
- IE
- GraphicConvertor
- PhotoDeluxe

the majority of which are available carbonised for OS X I believe.

At work at Sirenic www.sirenic.com we produce a Java based application that works with Apache and Tomcat and an Oracle or MySQL database.

MySQL is available for OS X, and I reckon I can get our system ported to OS X, but we have no Macs in the office...

Basically I need access to the UNIX bits... but broadband too as the system is heavy on network.

I like the look of X but as said, the apps I use are not carbonised and running classic is no fun, well, unless i get back up to 640mb, which I wont
