Default Is an updated PS3 on the way soon?

Have heard a few rumblings that an updated PS3 will be released this year.

Apparently no more 80GB versions being are sold, possibly to make way for a new design and larger hard drive model, but cant find anything concrete to back up this claim, anyone have any further info on if/when it might be due?

80GB models are coming to Europe, but aren't available yet. They will cost £299 and the 40GB will be reduce din price and eventually dicontinued.

the new 80GB model will not have BC.

Of course the smart way to go will be to wait until the 40 giggers drop in price snap one up and then replace the 40gb HDD with a 500GB

So the first ones were 60Gb and backwards compatible, then they brought out the non BC 40Gb, now they're bringing out the 80Gb?
Can't they make up their mind?

I don't think they care as they know after you've parted with your hard earned cash then you'll part with some more putting in your own hard drive.

Luckily wifi is built in tho so no extra cost there, but it's recommended to hardwire the internet if you're having problems with updates/downloads

Depends if your going to play ps2 games - when I got a ps2 many moons ago I never once played a PS1 game again so for me its no use only good thing with the 60gb is the cardreader but to warrent the extra cost its a no no again

I got the 40 gb model and will slap a bigger HD in it once I build up a few games - I only Downloaded a few demos and used up 20gb metal gear takes up a big chunk

also glad I got a duel shock 3 pad there miles better IMO

wired conection is tons better

Is it really that simple to swap the HDD? and what then happens to your warranty?

It's not a cheap console so wouldnt want to void the warranty on it.

Also, wuith regards the new 80GB they're going to bring out, will it be the same looks wise as the current version? A couple sites mention a complete redesign, making it smaller, and possibly a blu ray player upgrade, would defo be waiting for that as current console prices will slump massively if they do.

Swapping the HDD doesn't affect the warranty, it's fairly straight forward by all accounts, just have to kake sure you have a laptop size SATA hdd and the PS3 will atomatically format it for you...

Cool, cheers, and the Blu Ray player on the PS3, is it a decent one? I imagine Id use it for a lot of blu ray movies, as have a 1080p telly but only an upscaling DVD player, and given a lot of Blu Ray players cost almost as much as a PS3, might as well get one of those if the Blu Ray player is decent.

You can get better standalone players, but the PS3 seems to do a reasonable job, especially when you realise you can upgrade the firmware etc (something which most standalone players can't do).

I changed the HD on m 40GB to a bigger one, took very little time at all. As mentioned, doesn't void the warranty, and the instructions are in the manual. The current model is still (partly) backwards compatible with PS1 games, unfortunately not with FFVIII which I never finished and still won't until they do an update on which it works. I've kept a few other select PS1 titles out to play, but only been on one. PS2 is now in the loft so I'm not missing those games, and the original Xbox is now with my old man

I'd also heard rumblings of a new version, but nothing concrete so ended up getting mine a couple of months back, somewhat on a whim after having a bad day at work and needing some retail therapy

I've just updated the firmware on my standalone Sony Blu-Ray player, albeit by a download and burn to a CD-R but it's still possible.

I did say "most" can't do it. I know that some of them can, but they are in the minority..

Thi sis with updates, you want them to be like with 360 and PS3 - Ie.e you turn on your machine, it goe soff does the update restarts, job done.

You don't want to have to hunt to see if there happens to have been an update realsed.

I think that's changing now, the majority of new players coming out are upgradeable, I bought mine about 5 weeks ago, only cost £199 with 4 free blu-ray movies

But most updates for PS3 and 360 are for other things.

I wouldn't think firmware updates for a true standalone player come out that frequently.

I suppose it's down to an individuals preference, I watch blu-ray discs on my 1080P tv and the picture is noticeably better through the standalone blu-ray player than through the PS3 - why I have no idea.
