Default Playing Avis and x264 videos on an Xbox 360

As above what am i required to do to play the above formats on my xbox? now Ive had it updated on xbox live and i can get regular avi's to work, streamed from the "my video" folder, but not if i put a DVD with Avi files on into the xbox, the same goes for a x264 HD file on a disc, it doesn't even recognise it when its in the "my video" folder either

Do you have the H264 codec installed on your PC ? If not try the usb stick method as I think one of the updates for the 360 included the ability to read H264 encoded video. Maybe if its not installed on your PC and the Xbox is streaming from that, could be why they're not playing. As far as I know dix and xvid avi files are not supported by the 360 though theres probably a way round it.

There is some software you can download as I have an Mvix player which does not support x264 files but they supply the conversion software to view it as an mp3 file ??? with full DD and graphic display resolutions

Hi guys still no joy with the x264 file, now i didn't have the codec installed because I've recently formatted the hard drive but I've not put the latest version on, but it still doesnt recognise the file Is there. But saying that wmp doesn't recognise the codec either, you have to play it through wmp classic or vlc player. as for playing it through a usb stick, i don't have usb big enough for the x264 file, as its 4.4 gig

I take it you're trying to play an HD x264 encoded file in an MKV container? If so, it won't play natively. Your best option is to convert to WMV or M4V.

Hi Dunk, the x264 file is how i downloaded it, it works on my PC with VLC player and WMP classic, but not WMP 11, which is what i expected. When you say in a MKV container what do you mean?
As for playing Avi's i have on a dvd will they not play from the xbox dvd drive?

cheers

MKW container files have the .mkv suffix instead of .avi VLC and Media Player Classic shouldn't have any problems reading them.

The x264 encoded files. In general divx/xvid files will play on the 360 from DVD, USB or streaming. You may have issues with files encoded with old versions of divx.

Don't you have to download the codecs from marketplace for the divx to play? think I did when I first updated the dash.
