Default VMware VDI - how to increase VDI storage?

my VDI template is set at 8GB storage. the template is only a XP base OS, hence doesnt need a lot of storage. but when i deploy to a new virtual machine, i want about 20GB. i have edit the settings to increase the new virtual machine to 20GB but XP is not seeing the whole 20GB, only 8GB + 12GB as another partition.

is there a way to get a 8GB template into a 20GB virtual machine (without using partition utility)? i am using VMware ESX 3.5 and the storage is on SAN.

nope, no way of making it bigger without changing the template size. Can convert it and increase disk space, or attach the c drive to another vm and use diskpart to extend the volume.

it's a bit wasteful to have the template at 20GB!

Yep sure is

If you have Netapp and NFS you can thin provision, also if you use the new beta citrix xen server broker you can thin provision using that too VMware VDM will soon hopefully support this too

Thin Provision & Deduplication are your friends if using NetApp
