What about anything else he might touch in the case? They dont put RAM modules up on stilts .
Leave your PC plugged in but not turned on - THis will ground the case through the mains.
If you have an anti static wrist strap, then put this on and then connect it to the case.
If not, then touch the case (assuming its metal) with your hand before you start touching anything to discharge any potential you have.
If the case is plastic, the connect yourself up to - or touch something like a radiator.
While individual ICs are slightly vulnerable to static, once assembled on PBCs - like RAM is - it is all but static proof. You'd actually have to set out to wreck a RAM module to stand any chance.
