VMWare Server and cluster in a box...
Does anyone know if cluster in a box is supported in the free VMWare Server 1.05? I know cluster in a box is supported in GSX Server 3.2 so is VMWare Server the replacement for GSX?

Pretty much so yes
AFAIK Clustering is supported on VMware Server, version 2 beta is out but my god it is so slow with all that debug code in it
You are talking about Microsoft Clustering ?

Cheers Sonic and yes Microsoft clustering Decided to do learning/testing at home as we have been made an infrastructure projects team now which means no more BAU work (its been offshored ) and no more training basically. We have to account for every minute of our day to a business project which is then chargeable so no time for learning/messing about. I fecking hate working for an outsource company.
Just trying to find if you can clone/make templates in 1.05. Haven't found it yet so hope that doesn't mean I have to install a fresh copy for each machine I want We use vi3 at work so got all the features you could want so I guess i'm expecting a bit much for the free version!

In certain aspects, VMware Server is inferior to VMware Workstation (which is positioned as an alternative to the similarly priced Microsoft Virtual PC and intended primarily for client-side software development), due to lack of more advanced snapshot-related capabilities (such as cloning) or official support for Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home and Professional, or Windows Vista as host operating systems.

Nope you cant clone in VMware Server, so I switched to VMware Workstation, created my images then cloned them, set them up as I wanted to then and switched them back to VMware server to setup the Exchange 2007, runs quite reasonably on my laptop surprisingly enough
Next step (when I get more disk space) is to test Windows 2008
I can spend time messing about testing when in the office, but im usually so snowed under I dont really get the chance, or if I do its very short lived as im quickly back out on site again

Ah just seen can have vm workstation for 30 days evaluation so can do the cloning that way and avoid using virtual pc.
I'm going down the laptop route too, got a big enough hard drive on it for plenty of images so might as well. Want a core infrastructure based on 2003 AD and Exchange 2003 and Microsoft clustering and then start adding newer versions to it like yourself.

My laptop is a HP 6715b AMD Turion 64x2 with 4Gb Ram and 160 Gb drive, running Vista 64 bit
Biggest problem I have now is disk space as ive pretty much run out, I have windows 2003 64bit running Exchange 2007, widnows 2003 running AD, XP for stuff that doesnt run in Vista , Linux XP desktop and Mac OSx86 10.4 and now have no or very little disk space for Windows 2008 as it has such a large footprint requirement
you do know you can extend that 30 day eval dont you if you need to
Im looking at farming some of the images off now onto an external USB drive as they are cheap enough and dont need them to be running all the time, except maybe the XP one

lol yep always keys on the web somewhere but wanted to avoid going dodgey with it (for once). Will only need it for the cloning and done the one install tonight of 2003 Enterprise R2 so just need to clone that a few times and do a new install of 2003 Standard R2 and clone that a few times.
I was thinking of getting another external drive too, don't want to fill my laptop up as it's now my main machine and good for gaming. I've still got about 170gb free on it so got a while yet.

Ive always found it handy to keep a 'copy' of a fresh clean non named install of Windows Server fully patched up, that way I always have an unused image if I need to build another one

If you do the VI3 certification (VCP) you get a license for workstation FOC. Useful to know if you are thinking of the training.
Anyone use Netapp storage with VI3 ? Do you use RDMs or VMDKs ? Interesting discussion as to which......
