Default Anyone with RAID 0?

Just about to build a new computer. Already bought one hard drive and I'm aware I'd need to buy another by the same manufacturer and size if I want to go raid. Am I right in thinking that if both drives have 500gb it doesn't equal 1tb?
Also is the result worth the extra cost? Dissapointing or wow? Its a family computer so used for all sorts of things, so if its worth it all order a second drive.
Thanks for any help.

It will be pretty close to 1TB: the losses come from formatting, not from setting up RAID.

You are aware that you are doubling the chance of losing everything, aren't you? If half the stripe goes then the lot has gone. Performance increase is just noticeable for bursts, not really apparent for sustained use. It's mainly for bragging rights, or where every last iota of performance counts. Just how fast do you need to access your pr0n?

I have it in three rigs, but just for the bragging rights.

Yeah thanks for that, I do realise it doubles the chances, but its all relative and I guess those chances are relatively slim . I need to access my **** as quickly as possibe
But seriously. I just want to load programs like word photoshop etc etc more quickly, but quickly in a noticeable way.

RAID 1 which is mirrored will mean you will lose half the capacity

You want pure speed, go for raided (R5) solid state drives. Even though they're not that big yet, three for your OS, page file and apps you'll have plenty.

And I only found out you can;t do that in Windows XP. Grrr.

Well you can, with a some hex-editing of files....which I really can't be arsed with. Anyone know of a special tool that will do this ?

With hard discs being as cheap as they are, why not go the whole hog and go RAID 5? Then you get the capacity as well as the redundancy.

I ran a striped SATA I RAID array for 4 years and never had an issue.
Now I have a single SATA II drive & can't say I can notice a difference in performance.

think to be honest with the advances in hd technology (more cache etc) there isnt a great deal of real world performance diffeence imo
(I use a riad 0 on my desktop with a pair of hitachi 160gb drives)

If you went for some raptors though you would probably notice a difference
