Default wanted: firmware for Sonicwall TZ170

I've obtained TZ170, but the guy appears to have removed the firmware. So I've put it into safemode, which confirms there's no Firmware Images. I've tried to upload my firmware from my older TZ170 but it won't accept it.

Does anyone have a bog standard firmware I can use to get things going ?

Make Sonicwall
Model TZ 170
Rom SonicROM 3.1.0.2

The safemode says there's no firmware image, but if I set my laptop to obtain a DHCP IP address, its given one by the sonicwall at 10.0.40.1. It brings up the login window, but I've tried the default ones and they don't work. Is there a way to reset the unit back to factory defaults ?

Defaulting a TZ170 is done by holding the reset on the back for something like 5 to 10 seconds.

Chris, that puts the SonicWall into "SAFEMODE" whereby you can browse to 192.168.168.168 and do a firmware update. It says on this screen I have no firmware images, so can't reset it back to factory settings.

I'm stuck!

I have an older TZ170 with 3.0.0.3 firmware, but this newer TZ170 (above) won't accept it.

Sounds odd. Would have thought there was a factory defaults image to boot at that point.

PM me an e-mail address.

Chris.

Chris, no firmware image.

I've been looking into it and it appears the guy could've sold me a dud - there's a bug in certain bootroom versions that does this and prevents you uploading firmware to it in safemode. I'd send you a link but the sonicwall forum is down. Apparently some people can get around it using an older version of Internet Explorer to do the upload.

Update: When I raised the "no firmware image with the previous owner" he now tells me he bought it at a car boot sale, and simply pressed the reset button thinking he put it back to factory defaults (which it didn't) then sold it to me on eBay.

He described it as "used" in his ad, but I'm surely protected by eBay rules aren't I ? It doesn't have any firmware onboard!

Yeah, no joy - I don't honestly think its down to my old firmware (v3.0.0.3) - I think I've bought a knackered unit.

Woah! Nice find. I'll give it a go, but I'm guessing its not the source of the problem.

Big thanks Sonic.

If it oesnt work, can you not register the unit on Sonic Wall's site and get the latest firmware download ?

There is a good chance that the older firmware wont go on as it previously had a newer firmware

Ive seen similar with 3com wireless switches, upload to a firmware that is too new and the unit wont boot as the boot loader wont accept the image

This is just fantastic! Got it rebooted with the new firmware, went through the wizard and its now setup and running on my office LAN.

Can't thank you enough - I owe you a pint if you're ever up in Newcastle!
