My computer just lost its file assocations with .txt files

My computer just lost its file assocations with .txt files
Strange one this...
I used to be able to right click in an explorer window, go to new, then new text document. For some reason this just disappeared.
1) I opened up powertoys and went to the templates area to make sure New Text Document was ticked. The entry was not even present.
2) So I made a blank text document, and then told it to create an entry from that file. When I tried to do so it told me that no program was associated with that file type.
3) Double clicking on my file called empty.txt opens it up in notepad straight away. Right clicking on the file and going to open with, choose default program is set as notepad as well.
4) Going into folder options, file types there is indeed no entry for .txt files. It will let me make one, it even immediately pops up as notepad when I do. However as soon as I close that window, the entry disappears.
5) I had a look in the registry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Found the .txt extension part and all the entries look correct.
How do I fix this so that I can once again right click to make new text documents? What am I missing

work around - have you tried using "Context"

Just managed to fix the issue myself. None of the standard solutions on the web worked, not until I finally came along to this site. Great little resource. You download a reg file that you can import, it contains a lot more info than most of places. Fixed it no problem, and now I have .txt extension correctly listed

just downloaded the notepad replacement....amazingly complex replacement 
Maybe I will need that in the future should I start and code stuff. I just don't need any of the extra features that I have seen so far
