Remote Desktop Via SSH
Hello
I've just started a new job and the IT policy is extremely locked down: No Remote Desktop, all access to things like logmein etc.. appear to be blocked.
So I am going to use SSH to connect, does anyone have any experience of this?
I just installed COPSSH on my home computer, and when I get to work later will install Putty. Do you think Port 22 will be blocked? What traffic is actually generated?
Thanks,
Steve

Word of warning, if caught you will get P45'd, I imagine you are on a probation period in this job?
depending on the competance of the IT guys they may be able to detect tunneling apps through port 22.
Not the answer you wanted but is it really worth loosing your job

Thanks for the above. I would probably get warned at most as I'm the leader of one of the divisions. It is just a large company (and I'm used to working for small ones) and as such seems to have draconian policies.

The remote access thing may be a no go area, but in my place and the like, the only to get restrictions loosened so to speak is that you can proove it affects your ability to carry out your day to day duties in work.
In my place we move people into unmanged OU's (in active directory) but only if this is signed off by the HOD. Support for this person is then in a limited capacity i.e we set the machine up but.... if you break it...you fix it!!!!

just to clarify, do you mean connect from home to your work machine, or connect from your work machine to home? I assumed it was the latter
The Perimeter firewall (I would imagine) would block everthing in and limit most things going out, incoming (again a guess) could maybe be done via VPN

Data theft
breach of DPA
Virus brakout etc.
And for that reason people get slung out at most, written warning at least.

Why not just ask them to give you remote access, via VPN, or whatever way they would prefer to do it. Rather than you risking things trying to do it yourself?

They will probably have locked port 22.
However, 2 suggestions:
My work allow POP3 out, so I run my SSH server on port 110, remember you can run an SSH server on any port, not just the default, so use a tool to see what's open, and then use that port, OR,
use Logmein.com - I use this when I can't get our on any ports, not as fully functional as Remote Desktop and doesn't allow me to stream audio from my Slim Server at home, but it gives remote access to the PC when I need it to check something or set the TiVo to record when I've forgotten something
Works for me
