Default wireless router help please

Hi all, Ok im quite good with computers, i can usually mend any problem i have with mine and i also fix all my friends pc's when they go wrong so im not computer illiterate! However i'd like to get a wireless router for myself but have never realy done any research on these.I just made do with a normal usb modem. So to the question - i take it i need a router with built in modem and a network adapter, with these i take it that i plug the router into my wall then connect it to my phone socket, then i install the network adapter to my desktop pc and hey presto i have a wireless broadband connection to my pc? is this hw it works please?
Also do they provide a reliable high speed connection?
Thanks in advance
Matt

you are correct, you wll need to enter your connection / user details into the router config page (very easy)

you may also want to put some basic security on your router, the easiest to do is mac address filtering.
