Does the clock keep time when the PC is turned on? Or does it just lose time when it is off?

I would ask how old the motherboard is first

could be the old style battery soldered onto the board, I think even the first batch of watch style batteries were soldered inplace too

but yes, sounds like the cmos clock battery is going or gone, shouldnt really matter too much if you have always on internet (broadband etc) as vista by default i think tries to sync time with microsft time servers

He said its a new PC with Vista the older boards wouldnt run it.

I would take it back, removing the battery can seriously damage your motherboard. In some cases it wipes the CMOS/BIOS and it require flashing again... well back in the day it did.

I've been programming on PCs at work for nearly 14 years now

p.s. for it to be a joke it might be an idea to indicate the fact with a smilie of some sort (it looked like you were being serious)...

If this is a new PC, I'd be taking it back personally...

Well, contrary to popular belief, my psi / clairvoyant powers aren't as great as they used to be. So anything you can do to help us understand when you are making a joke (even unfunny ones) will be appreciated
