and to boot, they have requested and got 10% of the moneys made from all calls on the phone.... that will add up

How on earth did Apple manage to get a percentage of call and data traffic? Most handset providers beg carriers to use their phones. Amazing.

It's because it's Apple and it's the iPhone. The carriers know people will want one, wether it's just to have the latest in thing, or because they actually like the idea of the device, so they will bend to whatever deal Apple wants. You don't like it mr carrier, well you won't get the iPhone, I'll go to your competition and they'll go for it.

I have a feeling that they are getting more from the Euro carriers than AT&T, possibly because the price of the phone may be subsidized a bit, hence them wanting something for this. Typically phones aren't subsidised over here, whereas in the UK at least they are, so people are not going to really want to pay a stupidly high price for a phone, but if it's subsidized, they will.

The thing I'm curious about is the data plan. AT&T *has* to provide an unlimited data plan, and I would assume that the euro carriers will have been told to do the same, what's the point in using all the nice data centric features of the phone if you're going to get slammed on the data charges.

According to MacRumors the carriers are geographically exclusive and are as follows:

T-Mobile = Germany
Orange = France
O2 = UK

However, hardware hack for unlocking the carrier is being done live at the moment, so this exclusivity could be broken. Hopefully a software only hack will be forthcoming.

actually I phoned up 02 today and asked to pre-order the iphone.
The woman just went "whaaaat ??"

then had a quick word with her supervisor ,lots of mumbling and then she said check back in a week

I see they've got a build of MAME running on iPHONE, but because the thing is underpowered, its only running a few basic games.
