Question

Some Help Please

A friend of mine is staying somewhere where they have unmetered AOL access but on a very slow PC. So she wants to set her laptop up to access AOL without installing AOL (she has left her CD ROM at home and doesn't want to download the software as it is 39mb )

If anyone knows how to configure AOL as a dial up connection on a Win2k please let me know as I have been unable to find the details on the AOL site. I guess I just need access numbers and any DNS settings etc.

Thanks

Jon

I've steered clear of AOL for some time, but it used to install a proprietary network adapter.

Any AOL v5 or 6 users care to confirm if it still uses one? If so, can't see it working without the AOL adapter.

As far as I can tell from reading around the web it still does use it's own adapter! Bo!!ocks

Always avoided them myself, now I remember why!

Yep AOL has a propietary PPP style protocol, So you need its S/W

Failed miserably once to get a friends Palm total to them for that reason. Need custom AOL specific apps.

Thumbs down

Quality product, AOHELLNO!
Their software still blows to this day and it does indeed depend heavily on its own comms stuff
Funny that it has reeled in over 33million muppets who use their service. Still tons of people out there that think that AOL is the only way to 'get onto the internet', their own little warped version of the internet.
They suck unfortunatly.......

Never had it near my machines and only deal with removing that lovely stuff from clients machines.

Cheers,

Nick

Sorry mate, just me being my usual unopinionated self

It's just that it is commonly known amongst IT folk that AOL is/can be a major pain in the butt. I only ever get to deal with AOL when it has knackered itself/the computer and I have had to fix it more times than I care to remember. Their awkward software is a major pain in the butt.

Nasty stuff, but a damn sight better than it was 2/3 years ago

Cheers,

Nick

Talking

Your friend may find that the aol software is already in her laptop. Your friend should check her folders and see if one is called aol then browse to the setup etc. I have a brand new IBM T20 laptop and it was preinstalled in mine and all my previous computers also.

I set up her laptop and one of the things I removed from the base W2k build was AOL
