Question Transferring data from the old PC to the new one

I pushed the button on a new PC which arrives on Wednesday. As I see it, there's 2 ways I can move my data over:

- Use the LaCie backup device I use to populate the new disc
- Take out the D: drive from the old machine and slave it in to move everything across

Has either method got any particular merits?

The one thing that is bothering me is getting mine and the family's e-mails across. Both PCs use Outlook Express but I'm not sure what file to look for. I know the enterprise edition of Outlook uses .pst folders but what does Express use?

TIA

Cheers
Kav

Outlook express is a "drag n drop" (of the data files) if going from a similar version.

I do believe it has an import (but not an export) function as well.

(Firebird user here)

LaCie? I'd use an external HD if you have one. If not just dumping your old HD in should work fine (as long as your boot priority is set up correctly).

Dont know how this works but heard about it a lot on Talksport, gotomypc.com you then can access your old PC on any other PC. As I say don`t know if you can get the files you need then but its a months free trial.

Question

Thanks all!

Jack - I found the utility you were on about. Do you know if it's possible to connect 2 PCs together using a CAT5 cable and internal 10/100 ethernet cards? Is that the method you used?

Cheers

Yes you can - use a Crossover cable if you're connecting PC-PC, use a straight through cable if connecting to a hub/router.

3rd option:
Copy files over across your home network (if you have one of course!)

Thumbs up

Cheers all

Figment - I've got an ADSL wireless router with 3 spare ports (CAT5). If I plug in the new PC to the router, will both PCs be able to 'see' each other? Any upside to doing it this way rather than PC-to-PC?

Cheers
