Default Vista security?

My friend has just got a laptop with vista installed.

He has asked me to install securty ie firewall, spyware and virus checker.

I know what to put on a Win XP laptop, but a it clueless about vista,

Does it come with a decent firewall?

Will programs like zone alarm, AVG and Spy Bot S&D work?

Any advice?

Scotty

The built in Vista firewall isn't bad, (but not great). Zone alarm is working on a Vista firewall, but it's not ready yet.

For virus software, I use Nod32, (I certainly wouldn't even consider touching AVG). Nod32 is fast, very reliable, has a very small memory / resource footprint, is works great on Visa

Iain, can you tell me what I need to do with Vista Home PRemium in order for this damn thing to see my other XP Pro machine and my Mac (that my XP Pro machine can see) I just don't get Windows networking.....
The only way I can connect at the moment is over FTP which just isn't practical or fast...
(Sorry for the hijack!)

I've not used Home Premium yet (I'm using the Ultimate editions at home and at work), but the networking is basically the same as it was in XP. You set up the network connection to have a static or dynamic ip address, click the checkboxes to enable netbios over tcpip and register the computer in dns, and it should all just work.

What exactly are the problems you are seeing, (if you can ftp it suggests that you are most of the way there)...

No, but it's only £24 for a years subscription, (and it's so much better than the free ones)...

and it will run sweet.......for now

UAC while arguably gives extra security is not bulletproof by any means, whats to stop you downloading a virus by mistake

User-Privilege Flaw Hits Vista, WebTechGeek.com

worth a look

Because I've had to rescue somany machines that have had it installed. It's not bad for free I suppose, but it lags way behind the others where detection rates, (and ability to remove nasty things if they slip through) are concerned. I've seen it miss some quite nasty stuff...

LOL I hope you don't use it for anything important (like entering credit card / bank details into websites etc). You're just asking for trouble. The UAC only stops some stuff...

Vista polls networks differently to XP, so the XP machine needs a patch installing otherwise it won't return the Vista ping. Search the M$ site for the XP LLTD patch.

IPv6 has issue on some ISP's it stops the IP address being assigned, as you use IP to connect to a network or other PC I assumed, apparently incorrectly.. it just seems whenever I ask a question I get a million smart *** computer "experts" trying to show me up !

Ok you're all better than me, so can we stop with the "well actually" posts!

Pimmo I think you need to reliase that I (or no one else) is trying to show you up, and what's wrong with me trying to point someone in the right direction. I have had to ask for help on here several times, one a few posts down to do with Macs actually which Markus helped me out with. Do I have a go at him because he clearly knows more about Macs than me? No I say thanks as he pointed me in the right direction. I have been wrong on here also several times and when I am i'll put my hands up. As for smart *** computer expert, my correction was not nasty in any way and I wouldn't call myself an expert for that matter either, still learning be me

Pimmo, you show yourself up. Ever since you got a job in a call centre 'supporting' NTL, you have regarded yourself as a computer expert: you are not.

Your unbelievable arrogance beggars belief, as you argue with people who have forgotten more than you know. Youd do well to keep quiet and learn.

To be honest mate I'm taking a lot of things the wrong way recently, I'm not enjoying my life at the moment and I whole heartly apologise. I'm quick to anger and obviously spend my days having people moan at me for not only things I didn't cause but things I really don't care about. No excuse though, I shouldn't of jumped on you like that.

Simon on the other hand can go **** himself. I only post to try and help and I only post information I have been told. Sadly I do get pleasure from helping the good people on here out, yourself not included, I'll kindy ask you to mind your own business, ******.
