Thumbs up Gone and done it - Vodafone Broadband, here I come.....

Well, after a great "debate" with Pipex, and subsequently getting my MAC (after they "lost" the first one), I have decided to go with Voda......

£25 per month (if you have a voda mobile contract - I do)
8Meg broadband
all landline calls included
25% off mobile calls (from landline)
Line rental included (bye bye BT!)

You get an ethernet modem included, but I've already got a router and airport, so will just need the settings to put into that

Migration should be complete on the 27th.

So, far, very painless.

My only slight reservation is the potential for "technical issues" - downtime , or poor speed etc.....
The contract is for 18 months (will tie in with my mobile contract being renewed)....... not really bothered, as if the **** hits the fan, I've got internet at work.

Just slowly going through the migration of all of my log-in details for various registered sites to my GMail account as an interim......

Might be a bit of a risky move (cheapest ends up dearest et al), but if it lives up to the blurb, should be very good.
The reviews have been a mixed bunch really - but mostly more good than bad.....

Will keep you posted

Dan

All sounds good to me, I have been thinking about looking into this.

1) Are you capped, and if so, how much data are you allowed to upload/download per month.
2) What happens if you go over that cap? (cutoff, reduced speed, extra charges)
3) P2P throttling, lots of ISPs do this now, and its most annoying.

I think that's it, I don't do a lot of online gaming so latency times are not that important to me. Its always nice to have low latency though.

It does put it into perspective that I am paying just as much as you, only I get a 2Mb connection with Zen. My connection is amazingly good, but it is expensive.

3. not sure - dont really p2p s not an issue......

pipex are a v reliable service, but nobody talks to me the way i was spoken to. especially when i'm paying for the privilege!!!

FUP That means capped with a damn big mallet it you ask me

Zen are the only ISP I have been totally happy with (apart from cost), so I dunno, i am sitting on a painful fence on this one.

I have mentioned this to them (FUP), and in all fairness, they've said as long as you don't REALLY take the p1ss, you're ok.

My peak with Pipex was 22 Gig in one month (last August) - I got a load of Dr Who stuff for my daughter.

The rest of the time, I'm peaking (at TOPS) about 4 or 5 gig/month......

Doesn't bother me tbh Besides, ALL isps have some type of FUP......

Not all but most do these days. Zen, IDnet, Newnet, the Enta resellers and some LLU's don't IIRC. I think most people would much prefer a cap rather than fair useage policies as it's very open to interpretation, Tiscali being a prime example of this....download more than 1 picture (30k in size) in a night and expect a fair useage email

Think I will call Pipex today and get my MAC Code. This sounds like a really good deal. Likewise I dont do much gaming anymore so not bothered about ping. Always annoyed me that I have to pay BT £13 a month for the line on top of £23 to PIPEX for DSL.

Stayed with Pipex in the end. Asked for a MAC and they offered my Pipex MAX 8mbit Unlimited (FUP obviously) £14.99pm and only tied in for 12 months. So works out same as Voda really (as still have to pay BT rental, I dont use it for calls).

Better the devil you know as they say. Never had any major outages and I called them 3 times today and got through to a person within seconds so their phones are well staffed.

Simon.

*AN UPDATE*

All went well. Activation date todyay...........

and I'm online!

Not quite getting the 8Meg promised, (actually 2Meg, according to speedtest.net), but in all fairness, it's still early days, and AT WORST, I'm getting what I had before for £10/month cheaper

Will see how it goes

Anybody else taken the plunge?

have to admit, I was "bracing for impact"... but they even sent me the settings for my router (for manual setup), and it ALL worked first time

Well impressed

Will give them until Monday, then will be seeing what they can do about upping the speed

My Pipex got upgraded in about 5 days from placing the order. Getting about 750k/sec downloads at the mo and its been stable so cant complain. No idea how they make any money at £15 pm but hey I aint complaining.

UPDATE -

Now getting 6.5Meg Pretty happy. Very helpful customer service (on the phone)

Having a slight issue where I've set up additional email addresses for the family members.....

Addresses have been set up, but no passwords have been allocated to them, so I can't access them!! Must have been a software glitch, as I wasn't given the opportunity to set them up......

This minor issue aside, very happy so far

If you've just signed up to Voda (mobile), for £25, you can't go wrong (IMHO).... I've halved my communications bills
