Cool Wireless internet query

Hi all,

I must say, given that I'll shortly be getting a laptop with wireless capacity, the idea of wireless internet is very appealing. Problem is, I know diddly squat about what to look out for. I would like something that means I can enjoy broadband properly i.e. it doesn't slow down to 56k speeds as soon as I ditch the wires! I currently have an 'up to 8MB' connection with Plus net. My PC will have the following card:

"Integrated Dual-Band Intel® Pro WLAN 3945 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g 54 Mbps) for Duo Processors"

So, what router/equipment specification do I need?

I don't want anything fancy, just one that'll let me run the laptop wireless and also be compatible with Xbox live.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Paul

Most routers in PC world will do the job nicely and you have a pretty big choice. I have heard mixed messages about some routers working with the Xbox360 but in priciple they should all work ok. You may want to hit an Xbox360 forum and see what people say about wireless or find a router you like the look of and go to the manufactures website and look at there FAQ. I have noticed alot of them include "how do i setup my xbox360" instructions now. Forums will be your best bet as people will have plenty of comments regarding the different makes. I have had two netgears previously and both caused me problems so my personal choice would not be them again. That said i am now using BT one and not had a problem in over a year.

Hi Ns,

you'll need something like this:

NETGEAR DG834G Integrated ADSL Modem 54Mbps 802.11g Wireless Firewall Router

I have one, always worked fine with no problems, but I have seen some reviews etc. where people have had problems with Netgear stuff.

I don't use Xbox live, so can't comment on that?

echo those comments, I've tested these for customers and I was very impressed with them, should work fine with xbox live

wireless is good for convenience but using cable will be faster and more reliable
