Default OS X gurus!

Markus, swiss et all where are ya?

OK I now use my imac daily now with parallels for my win dev. requirements. There are two small things I miss from windows that I cant see how to do.

First off just habit I guess everytime I walk away from a win machine I do a quick ctrl+alt+del to lock the machine, can I do this in OS X?

Second, I like the way windows explorer whilst sorting files by name shows me folders first and files second. Finder shows *everything* in name order and I find the mixture of folders and files messy, can I do the same as explorer?

Cheers

Gary

The first, go to applications -> utilities and "Keychain Access"

Go into the preferences and enable "show status in menu bar"

You can lock your screen by clicking the small padlock in the top right menu bar when you need to walk away from the screen.

*yawn* Sorry, just woke up

Adding to the excellent advice from BuRR, you could also go into System Preferences, then into Security and enable the "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver", then Go into the Desktop and Screen Saver pref pane and click Hot Corners. Set one of them, I use the top left one, to "Start Screensaver".

When you away from the machine, you can simply move your cursor to the top left of the screen, whereupon the screensaver will activate. When you come back, simply move the mouse to deactivate the screensaver and you will be prompted to enter your password.

As for the Explorer type of showing folders first then files, I do not think that is possible with the Finder. The nearest you could get would be to switch to list view and sort the list by "Kind". This would group the folders together, but the sort is alphabetical on kind, so Applications would appear above folders, (A vs F) and the same appiles for other things, so it's not exactly the same.

Something like Path Finder which is a file management utility, might give you the explorer like functionality you're looking for, but I've not tried it myself.
