a wireless router like the link below

Broadbandbuyer.co.uk | Wireless Networking, Wireless Router, ADSL Router, NAS, VoIP and Broadband Hardware Experts

you need an ADSL router NOT a cable router

for something easy to set up and has decent features this would be tidy

Broadbandbuyer.co.uk | NETGEAR DG834G v3 Wireless-G ADSL2+ Router

had a play about with one of these a few days ago and was impressed

guide there to set it up, its for an older version but should be similar

yes thats it in a nutshell

use a network cable to set the router up

if using wireless use at least WPA security, WPA2 is available on that router via a firmware update link below

DG834v3 & DG834Gv3 Firmware Version 4.01.20UK/4.01.19WW

make a strong wireless password here

WPA-PSK Key Generator | Kurt's Website

get the patch to allow you to use WPA2 on the laptop here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

ideally you want to use WPA2 with a strong 64 character random password

Highly recommended that you change the default admin password on the ADSL router, once you've got it installed and running.

Routers take the load off the machine in that sense, as it sorts out the internet connection and routes it either through network cable or wireless. The former being faster and more reliable.

They also provide great security and prevent people directly accessing your machine. In a sense, they remember what is sent out of your network and only allow those connections back in, even with one PC I'd still use a router

Just have to remember that you are looking to buy a Modem/Router all in one because the modem supplied by tiscali will most probably only have usb connectivity.
