The wireless network is now working!
Just thought I'd say thanks for everyone for their help!
Especially 12Lee for a very competitively priced wireless access point! And it stacks neatly on top of my braodband router.
My £40 USB wireless adapter is small and does the job perfectly! Although I did have an issue with using XP, but reverted back to Windows 2000 and it is spot on!
And people who thought that an 11Mbps adapter would be a bottle neck for my 1Mb line, well lets say I can still download at 130k/s and still get bursts of 250k/s!! So exactly the same as hardwired, but I think I ran through the theory in another thread!
Thanks to GavinP for mentioning security! It's now running a 64bit WEP key!
Thanks guys, you came through for me again! Now on with the movie machine, updates on the hardware decoder soon!
Cheers
Andy

Andy - Any chance you can list the components, prices and suppliers ?
What was the XP problem you had ? Mates PCs will be running Win98 and XP. Can you enlighten me on the security bit too ?
Offline if you prefer.
Cheers,
Dunk

Already had a LinkSys Braodband router connected to my cable modem, with the router doing the MAC address cloning (of the NIC for BY purposes!!) and DHCP.
The router has a 4 port hub and it had 3 PC's connected via CAT5 running 100Mbs.
I bought the following:
Wireless Access Point (LinkSys WAP11) - Email 12LEE
Wireless USB adapter (Netgear) - Inmac £39.99 + P&P + VAT about £50!
I think the issue was my PC, I'm using an old Compaq Workstation AP400 with dual Pentium 266 and half a gig of RAM! When the machine was idling with XP the processor level was about 30%!! With W2K it's down to 3%!!
I believe the issue was with the XP driver, but the W2K went straight through and worked!
The WAP was very easy to configure (connected the BB router via the uplink), via a PC that was connected by wire (as the wireless would lose connection as you change the settings!!! )
With security, you can set the level at the WAP, I think there were 3-4 choices. I set it to 64bit, as this was the highest level on the USB adapter. The WEP key (Hexidecimal code) is generated when you enter in whatever combination of letters and numbers. If you are on the same PC, you can cut and paste the WEP key!
I've never done it before, so it took a bit of fiddling (and swearing) but all working now!
Someone with your networking skills should have no issues!
If there is anything you would like me to go into more detail with, post it here or drop me a mail!
Cheers
