these pc's arnt really on a network, the only thing that is been shared is the internet connection,
im not technical enough to set up proxy's etc and i have tried to block the sites into the router but no joy,
the thing that seemed to work before was to edit this txt file which is within the system32 folder on every machine, but i have forgotten where it actually is

are you talking about the hosts file for dns lookup?
if so its %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc (systemroot is the folder you chose to install windows in, ususally c:\winnt or c:\windows)
add a line that looks like
127.0.0.1 news.bbc.co.uk
or whatever site you are trying to block

Hi,
try this
127.0.0.1 messenger.hotmail.com
127.0.0.1 dp.msnmessenger.skadns.net
if the users arent too clued up you could change their windows firewall if theyre using xp sp2. just untick messenger on the exceptions list and see if that helps.

MSN is increadebly hard to block as it has numerous servers and ip addresses plus it also uses port 80 to get out, I managed to block it on my router at home but it was not straight forward.
