Default Netgear DG834GT router with Vista PC?

Hi,

Is anyone out there using the above combination? If so, please reply, as I'd like you to test a web site for me.

I think there's a compatibility issue...
Thanks.

Works fine for me with a Netgear USB WG111T Antenna.

I cant think of any reason why a wireless router would have an issue with an operating system.

If anything it will be a compatability issue with IE7 and the site - there are ways around this with an IE6 runtime which you can download.

Hello

I have a DG834N and everything is fine. As above, a wireless router should not be affected by an operating system.

Thanks for the responses guys.

It's not an incompatibility with IE7. I know that because I can access the site on the same Vista laptop, while I'm at work.

Can someone with a Netgear DG834GT wifi router and Vista, try accessing MEDIAPORTAL - free MediaCenter HTPC Software - Home It has to be this combination, so I can rule it in or out as a possible cause of the problem.

Please post back with the results.

Thanks.

I don't know why the link was translated to an advert in my last post. The site is team-mediaportal.com.

Thanks.

I have a DG834Gv2 which is similar to the GT, except the wireless part is different. Website works fine from Vista, and there's no reason why it shouldn't.

If the router has net access any website should load within reason.

the computer doesn't detect the router as a device, so there can be no issues

I know there <shouldn't> be any reason why I can't get onto this lone site, but the fact is, I can't. (

Regardless, I can log onto the site when my Vista laptop is connected to the internet via my corporate network, but when I log on at home, I can't get on.
It's either down to router/Vista compatibility or my home ISP.

The ISP says there's nothing stopping me from getting to the site and my router setup hasn't changed.

I moved to a new ISP around the same time as getting this laptop, so it could be one or the other!

I've tried that and it worked, but how does that prove it's my ISP? It could still be the router, couldn't it?

In fact, I've just remembered why it can't be my ISP; my XP computer can access the site without problems. Sorry for not mentioning that before.

As soon as I try to get on to Media Portal via my laptop, I can no loner access the site from the XP machine. I have to re-set NAT on the router before I can use the XP machine to load the site again.

This is weird and I think the above info proves it's a problem between Vista and the DG834GT.

Unless anyone else has any other suggestions?

So back to my original question, does anyone have a DG834GT and Vista? It's the only way for sure that I can rule the router in/out.

Thanks.

Are you sure there is nothing on your lappy to stop you accessing that site, firewall? anything else? There's definately something funky going on if it then stops the XP machine from connecting. But anyway it can't be the router if it works from XP. As mentioned before a router is not treated as a device by the OS regardless of it being either XP or vista.

Unless theres an issue with the router communicating between the computers on your lan?

Are you sure about that. I've just looked at my Vista install and the network stuff has identified the fact that I have a D-Link router, (along with a link to the routrer home page). I can even do a properties on it and get a list of the ports I've opened on it for various stuff. So there must be some sort of comms going on between between Vista and the router that isn't happening on XP.

uPNP . Turn it off, your router will still work ( in fact on the DG834GT it'll work better )

Shouldn't be; I can access the site while I'm connected at work. Same Firewall on my laptop, in fact at work there's probably stronger protection as part of the network there.

I'm on Orange broadband.

Netgear's site lists some Vista beta-firmware for various routers, so there must be a compatibility issue.

uPNP? On Vista? Well I've just connected to the wireless network at the office and I can access team-mediaportal.com, so I guess that rules it out, doesn't it?
If you don't think so, please explain.

I'm baffled.

Weird, Iain must be right, try that firmware update. You seem clued up, so I don't need to tell you to backup your existing firmware right?

I already checked the Netgear site, but the DG834GT Vista beta firmware download, strangely doesn't include the firmware...

So back to my original question, does anybody out there use Vista alongside a DG834GT???

I want to know if anyone else can recreate this problem.

Help.

IIRC UPnP is HTTP code to open ports etc

can you ping the website from the vista machine?

Dunno about that. Does upnp work over ethernet then?

All I know is that XP doesn't do it, and Vista does so perhaps that might be part of the problem

yeah, thats basically what it is, XP does have it, but not as advanced.

"UPnP technology can be supported on essentially any operating system and works with almost any type of physical networking media"

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but can someone explain how this can be the cause, when I can access the site from work (wired and wireless)?
Cheers.

I'm 100% sure I tried that previously and it timed out.

I've tried just about everything, so I want to know if anyone else with the same set-up has the same problem, but nobody has said.

We've got quite a few bits of equipment we use to reconstruct stuff on - I'll dig about and will let you know. 9 times out of 10 its a driver issue or some shooty code fault with the network hand shaking.

Laters,

Lewy.
