Default Wireless help.......

Ok where do I start!?

At the moment we have NTL broadband and this hooked up to the desktop PC. I'm thinking of going 'wireless' as we now have the following;

Nintendo WII
Nintendo DS
New laptop (not sure if this is wireless enabled?)
Xbox 360

I have no idea what I need to buy for any of the above or how easy it will be to set up (I'm pretty much a novice).

Can the desktop PC stay as it is (not wireless) - its right next to the NTL cable modem anyway.

How much am I looking at? and what are the best products to buy nad where from? (quality & value wise).

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

*deep breath*

In order to go "wireless" you need a wireless route. In your case a Cable router.

So a Wireless cable router. As strange as that sounds. The cable is the type of internet connection you have.

The main PC can be connected via ethernet cable (RJ45 cable) so it can sit right next to the router and modem.

The other devices will need either another long cable or some kind of wireless receiver.
Not sure on prices but the 360's wireless add on is about £60

Thanks, What about this one?
LINKSYS WUSB54GS & WRT54GSUK at PC World - Cheap Wireless DSL Routers - LINKSYS WUSB54GS & WRT54GSUK SPEEDBOOSTER 125g ROUTER AND USB ADAPTER

One other thing...I connect my PC to the cable modem using USB (my house was struck by lightning and the ethernet has not worked since) Will this cause any problems? Can I still conet my desktop straight to the router using USB?

No, routers are not USB

Two choices

1.NIC card about £10
2.Wireless Dongle £20

OR call up NTL and tell them your internet doesnt work and you dont have the USB cable

They will talk you through some tests on the ethernet setup and determine if its broke

question though ??

How the hell did it break your Network card ??

The network card is connected to the Modem, the modem to underground cables ???

$h!t knows! I just know that it hasn't worked since, my tv screen downstairs also went purple!. Afterwards Ntl came out and replaced the modem (that was goosed aswell) A guy on the helpline then talked me through the setup, went through everything and he thought that the ethernet card got damaged, we tried USB and that was fine so I just stuck with that. I'll buy a NIC card first and see if I can get that to work. I take it I can just swap them over?
Once again thanks for your help.

Pimmo2000 - Just to let you know, bought all the equipment today and got everthing set-up, so easy to do, it suprised me. Anyway thanks for all your help However I am concerned about people pinching my connection. Is it easy to protect the wireless setup?

Simple enough yeah, the PC one I can help with not sure on the 360 etc

All you need to do is edit the wireless network in the route config and add a passphase or key, then chose to connect to the network on one of the wireless systems and it will ask for the password
