Default partition not found error when re-installing

Cousins laptop has been playing up recently and we decided to do a full restore using the cd's supplied, get to 98% complete and then an error message of "partition error" pops up, and restore is unsuccessful,
anyone any pointers?

If you did you may well be knackered, cos some rubbish 'recovery' discs use files stored on a small partition on the hard drive. If you removed this partition/files then you will need to do a full re-install of windows using your supplied windows disc not the 'recovery discs'.

no i havent tried to format the drive at all.....actually now forget how to do that

Just tried booting up aith the system cd provided, and then it prompted in turn for recovery disc 1 and then disc 2,

These are the only windows discs which came with the laptop AFAIK

What was the 'problem' before the re-install?
Are the 'restore' discs damaged/dirty?
