Wireless for Dummies
Can someone help with this, or point me to a an idiots guide?!!
Got a wireless enabled laptop, and a pc with USB broadband modem. I got a used Belkin wireless modem / router, which I thought would be quite straight forward to use. I haven't got any software for it.
I've plugged the phone lead into the new modem, and connected the pc to it using an Ethernet lead.
how do I get the pc to 'see' the router? If I switch the router off, the the PC says LAN cable unplugged, so it seeing it to an extent. The router doesn't have the IP address on, which I though they should, so I can't ping it.
I've used the Wireless Network wizard on pc and laptop, but it doesn't seem to do much. I need to get the laptop to detect the modem / router.
I'm also not sure how I get the pc to connect to broadband (Tiscali) suing the new modem, rather than trying to find the USB one.
Any pointers, before I get an AOL package with free router (and software!)?

I'm assuming the router is ADSL ?
Ok so plug the router into the phone line and connect it to the PC via Ethernet.
Got to your Internet explore and type the address 192.168.2.1 and it will ask you for your router name and password probably written on the router.
Access the router pages and put your username and password for your ISP.
Then go to the wireless setting page and create a wireless network, go to the pc search for a network find detect connect and enjoy
Any more help u2u me
*the internet will be now classed as a local area network by the way.*

Do broadband connections not need a phone number for the ISP then?

How do you mean ?
Oh **** I see, no, the router will log you in automatically evertime you turn it on. Remove any log in or modem software from your pc.
Think of it as loggin onto a PC, the connection is always there and always connected, you just need the username and password to access the information

Half way there - got the modem connecting to t'internet, but the laptop won't detect the wireless signal. I've run the wireless setup wizard, which just seems to synchronise the settings. I assume the wireless router works, though I've no way of checking.
Any other ideas? Should the laptop just detect the signal, or do I need to do more fiddling with the modem?
cheers

I've set one up on the PC, and the PC connects to the router ok. I've set the printers and some folders up sharing.
Do i need to creat a network using the router login page then? Couldn't see anything obvious there. You can set the wireless channel, which was set yo 12, so I set the laptop the same
