Broadband Speed on adsl max
Need expert advice as this is doing my head in
Ok been on 2mb Bt untill a few months back and i upgraded free to adsl max 8meg
My estimated download speed was 4-5 meg which is great.
However i can't get anywhere near that. My router was upstairs on one of those thin flat phone extensions and it was connecting at 2.4meg so i thought crap cable could be the problem and moved the router downstairs and straight into the main socket and bought wireless pci cards for the 2 desktops upstairs, it now connects at 4.8meg great
Downloading on my newsgroup account the speeds are up and down like a ****** draws 400kbs then 50kbs up and down but the performance of the wireless cards is crap to say the least, dropping the connections all over the place so i ditched them yesterday and went back to wired, wireless laptop is as always perfect.
My router was downstairs for months connected at 4+ meg but everything at that time was wireless and i never hit 4meg, 1.8 - 2.0 max apart from a brief 400kbs as i said.
Problem is i can't download at 4meg although I'm connected at that on every speed test i run 190 kbs or 1.8meg on the newsgroup i get 240kbs constant, my desktops are both wired now and still i never make more than 1.8 - 2.0 meg although I'm connected at double that. Any ideas or should i just give up and be gratefull it all works at least

Someone with more knowledge than me will be along in a minute to help. Meantime I guess you are suffering from the increasing use of datastream throttling being used by more and more ISPs.
My approach to all of this now is that I'm not that concerned as long as I can download what I need. If it takes 2 hours or 2 days then I'm not bothered either way. I would prefer "always available" super fast downloads but I guess those days are no longer with us.
Must admit I drew the line at downloading Linux. It was going to take so long to get the 5 disks downloaded via torrent that I went out and bought a mag that was giving the OS away for free (well its free anyway no matter where you get it from but you know what I mean).

Ian,
few things to try
btw which ISP and router
then try The Broadband Resource
that should tell you what you expected, and how far way from the exchange - that will give us a starting point.
next try removing all internal phones and wiring - connect to the test socket only
see here Prodigy Networks
that will remove any interferance from other house equipment.
let us now how you get on.
Dave.

Thanks guys
I don't download much but if i'm supposed to get 4 meg and my router says 4 meg i'm wondering why i can't.
I'm with BT and using a Linksys WAG54G v2
Right the Broadband resource site tells me different to the original activation email i got when i switched to adslmax.
It claims i can recieve 2.5 meg or greater my email said 4 - 5 meg. It says i'm 2.07km from the exchange so the 2.5 meg seems right doesn't it.
Ok Stats if i'm upstairs on my extension cable
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: INTERLEAVED
Downstream Rate: 2432 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 11 db
Upstream Margin: 16 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 49
Upstream Line Attenuation: 31
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0
If i'm downstairs router plugged directly into the master socket then
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: INTERLEAVED
Downstream Rate: 3968Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 13 db
Upstream Margin: 21 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 48
Upstream Line Attenuation: 31
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0
However download something then there is almost no difference between the two apart from when connected downstairs at 3968kbps the download comes in steady 240kbs and doesn't fluctuate upstairs at the lower connection speed it wavers around a little between 200 and 240 kbs.
If 2.5 meg is my lot then fair enough but if i'm connecting at 4meg why can't i get it.

it looks like your internal cabling is causing the difference
Upstairs - Downstream Rate: 2432 Kbps
downstairs - Downstream Rate: 3968Kbps
what are you downloading and using what program - it may be the source that is the issue

For a start you need to find out what your ip profile is set at on your exchange and to do that go here >>> Test Result
Then you need to check your exchange and see if it is listed as a problem exchange by BT by going here>>>> Exchange Status Checker
You will never get a throughput equivalent to your sync speed. Your ip profile determines your throughput and will always be a minimum of 400kbps less than your sync speed. For your ip profile to increase you need a constant sync speed for more than 3 days of a speed that will take you up the next increment (or numerous incremements in one jump) in the ip profile range which is 500kbps.
My ip profile was set to 2500kbps for ages and then I got a sync speed of 3700+ for more than 3 days, a couple of days after that my ip profile then increased to 3000kbps.
