Help for Mac learner
I installed Firefox and MSN Messenger last night.
I reboot this morning to fnd that MSN is still there in the apps 'bar' at the bottom of the screen but Firefox has disappeared! Any clues as to where it may be? It does not seem to be in the Applications folder
MSN and Firefox were both on the desktop and in the Apps bar. MSN has disappeared from the desktop but as commented has remained in the apps bar.
Also how can I run .wmv files on a mac, or how can I convert them.
Everything else works so far

flip4mac will sort out the wmv files and play them inside QT player. VLC is also a good app.
One of the biggest mistakes I see when onsite at clients is those who download msn messenger (actually most apps) and then it appears on the desktop as a disk image file / mounted disk.
they then drag the app straight into the dock. then they throw away the disk image later.
You must drag the app into the applications folder FIRST, then drag it into the dock from the icon from the applications folder. Then you can delete the disk image on the desktop.

The dock is simply a way of quickly accessing applications or files. If you drag a file to the dock it stores a reference to the location of the file you dragged and when you click it, is looks up the location of the file and runs/open it.
What Mark is talking about is when you download an installer package or disk image (.dmg) it is like putting a CD in the drive, if you then drag the program from a CD or disk image the dock will store the reference to its location on the disk or image. If the disk is then ejected or the disk image 'unmounted' then the reference does not work.
You must copy the program from the disk image/CD into your applications folder (or somewhere on your hard disk) this means the dock reference will then work. It is possible that you dragged Firefox from the disk image and when the machine was rebooted it was removed because the disk image was no longer available.
Have a look on your desktop for a file like firefox.dmg and double click it, it will mount the image and appear like a CD on your desktop, open it and drag the Firefox application to your applications folder.
You can also download Windows Media player from here:
Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X

Just to clarify - a reference to a file is also know as an 'alias'
You can make aliases to any file by choosing make alias from the file menu when you have a file highlighted, or press CMD+L
OR by clicking, holding and dragging the file and pressing ALT+CMD and then releasing in the location you want the alias to be. Hope thats clear.

The honeymoon is over
I downloaded WM9 for Mac OS.
I needed to install Stuffit Expander to unpack it.
Stuffit has now hung on my desktop and I cannot close down, restart or anything. I can't quit stuff it.
Everything else continues to work though

Windows equiv of an alias is a shortcut.
As for WM9, if you have flip for mac installed then you should not need WM9 to view windows media files, they should open in quicktime.

Markus,
I am stilling clinging to the need for Microsoft...
...now abandoned as I have loaded up NeoOffice (which I realise is a development of Sun StarOffice but it seems to run far better on the Mac)
No need for anything now in terms of extras.
There are lots of little things I need to learn which I hope will come with time, e.g. to copy an image from a web page in Win would be right click. Not found the equivalent in Mac yet

just drag the image onto your desktop, or on the photoshop icon in the dock, or preview or into an email....
If it cant paste the image it will paste the URL.

Swiss,
thanks for that - it is one of the recommended options in the link by Markus. I transferred everything over this morning.
I have to say that all you Mac people are very helpful

fn key + delete = forward delete on a mac (I think it works on MacBooks).
We're really good aren't we, answering questions he's not even asked yet
