About a month or so ago got a Panasonic 37" Plasma (TH37PX60) - it's a totally fantastic set.

Generally the tippy toppy out of all sets in terms of picture quality are the Pioneer plasmas (nice but ££££), closely followed by the Panasonic plasma then followed by the others - the Sony Bravia V-series are supposed to be good, but they can't match the Pioneer and the Panasonic plasmas.

Generally plasmas are a little harder to live with than the LCDs - they run hotter and can suffer more from retention issues. In saying that, my Panasonic runs cool enough and I've been really careful with the "burn in" phase, particularly with logos that tend to appear in the corner of various Sky channels.

Nip round John Lewis/local friendly emporium and make up your mind. One thing that particularly attracted me to the Panasonic set was the swish cabinet stand which looks dead good.

Everyone that has seen it has been staggered at the quality even at standard definitions. In a different league to the usual high street brands.

Toshiba 37WLT66 LCD currently just over a grand in JL, with 5 year gaurantee included superb price picked mine up last week.

Plasma's tend to be better at standard TV and black levels, where as LCD will show the blockyness of standard TV more but tend to give a crisper picture when viewing High Def pictures

i was also looking at sharp LC - D90U or D40U lcds. any views?

one question is , does the tv upscale standard definition signal upto 1080i on any of the lcds or plasmas?

and whats a good dvd player that will also upscale standard dvd image to 1080i or p ?

and thinking about it can u actually get a digital tuner and connect it via digital cable to a upscaling dvd player and get a upscaled image on your hd lcd/plasma??

I was really impressed with the sony bravia's until I saw them head to head with Panasonic and Pioneer plasma.
Ended up with the panny as couldn't stretch to the pioneer 42in.

neither dvd or tv are designed to benefit from a hdtv, thats where sky-hd, hd-dvd and bluray come in

I bought an LG 32LX2R (32")

Its HD ready and it makes a world of difference to the 360 gameplay, kind of why i bought it.

Nearly everything i have is LG even the fridge LOL, i find there stuff very very good and will always buy stuff made by them.

In my honest opinion

As an owner of a Toshiba 42" LCD and also a Toshiba 27" LCD I would buy a Plasma.

The picture quality on Sky+, terrestrial and DVD is pi$$ poor. Admittedly the picture on X-Box 360 and HD broadcasts are amazing, but that accounts for 5% of the time I use the tv.

I've seen pictures on a friend's plasma and I think I made the wrong choice going for LCD.

As most people say, LCD will show a crisper picture on HD, so maybe in a few years time an LCD would be a good buy, for now I wish I had chosen a plasma. Even considering selling my 42" Toshiba WLT58 and buying a plasma.

Toshiba 32" WL66 all the way mate, had mine around a month and am really pleased with it. Great sound and picture plus only paid £720 for it brand new.

I have a Toshiba WLT 32 " , bought it in April and even then it was only £899.00 ... gob-smacking PQ through Sky + box and even better through a Denon 1920 up-scaled to 720p , waiting for Sky HD to come down in price now

I love the ambilight feature on my Philips. At first I thought it was just a gimmick but turn if off half way through a movie and your eyes really notice it (it becomes harder to focus). It does add another dimension to the viewing experience and the quality of the Philips LCD is quite impressive.

actualy thinking about it , that is a very good feature!

because u should realy have some ambient light beside or behind the tv to stop eye strain in a darkened room.

so rather than a table lamp ....

I've got a Pioneer 436XDE & love it, no problems with it at all and the picture is fantastic, even from fairly close.

I've run some rope light round the back of mine so I kind of get the Phillips effect.

I'd recommend the Pioneers to anyone.

If you get a decent TV, then you should go for a size larger than you think - you get used to it really quickly...

any major differences with pdp 436 xde and pdp 436 sxe ??

The 436 XDE has a separate tuner box, but the same panel as the SXE. If you want to wall mount, the XDE only has 2 cables running to the panel.

I have the 436XDE, bought before the World Cup, and the quality is stunning, for Freeview and HD broadcasts. Ran it in at low contrast for around 100 hours and no problems with the kids pausing Sky+...........

There are recommendations for initial setup of the Pioneer plasma's available on-line, if anyone wants the settings I used drop me a mail.

I initially looked at LCD but the refresh rates just aren't there yet and can't compare to some of the decent Plasma's at the moment such as the Panasonic PX and Pioneer XDE models.

Having viewed the Panny and Pioneer side-by-side viewing HD, Component and freeview signals, the differences were minimal and I would have normally gone for the Pioneer, but this time I said no, the name just wasn't worth the difference. I also got a free DVD played and 5 years warranty via John Lewis for £1542.00 inc Pedastal.

Pioneer have led the way with Plasma, but not any more.

The Panasonic also have DVB and terrestrial tuners, not sure if the Pioneer does and I'm more than happy with my TH42PX60.

i have the LG32XR and only use it with an LG DVD player via the HDMI lead. It's fantastic, crisp, with great contrast and black levels.

...but it's supposed to be worse in any other situation - broadcast tv, etc.

my Phillips has a 6ms refresh rate and the only time I have found it to be noticable is during the Tennis, you do see a small amount of ghosting from the ball. Apart from that it is fast enough for any major action scene. I have also run native resolution HDTV from my Sony camcorder and I cant wait for HDTV over here, the quality blows a DVD out of the water

Yes, via component and scart. If you can use component I'd certainly recommend it over RGB.
