Question CHEAP laptop for my daughter......

OK, I have a plan hatching for my daughter's Chrimbo prezzie.

She's 6 at the moment and is very IT literate.

She wants a TV for Chrimbo, as she now wants a bit more independance

I'm willing to combine the two and look at a VERY cheap laptop.

The criteria are :-

Must have a DVD
Must be able to take a DVB dongle (usb 2.0)
MUST be bl00dy cheap
Wireless would be useful, although her current AMD K2-450 ( ) has a wifi/usb dongle providing access to my network

Not overly bothered about it being a PC, perhaps a very cheap G3 laptop......

Doesn't need to play games as such, just be potent enough to play DVDs (she'll be accessing her music from the house network folder - yes, she can already do this!!! )

Suggestions?

yeh

Nothing major - I've got some big icons of her music artists on the desktop. Clicks on it and it goes straight into Media player

Same for her photographs - she uses my old fuji digital camera.

She knows more about it than the wife!!

Meant to ask - moreso what is the spec required?

How much RAM, processor type & speed? HD & DVD spec?

tbh, £300 is too much for a 6yr old's Chrimbo pressie. I was thinking more along the lines of £100 ish.... obviously 2nd hand or refurbished......

Any ideas?

Geting a laptop that runs XP and the latest programs that she'll want may be the problem for £100. Just look at the final sale prices on ebay.

tristarpc have a pentium 3 laptop - 1ghz with 256mb of ram, DVD/CDRW, floppy, with wireless adapter and 30gb hard drive for £180 (ex corporate)

How about an IMac G3/400mhx loaded with RAM?
These can come with a DVD drive too......

I know it's not a lappy, but the screen's TV-size, plus it's a computer.......

Comments?

Dan, I've got one of those here, only 64mb of Ram though and 10gb disk (might be bigger - standard waas 10gb), 2x FW and 2x USB, DVD, modem keyboard and circular mouse.
Can pre load with Tiger.
Make me an offer if you want..... (You can arrange postage though...)

Sounds interesting Rich

Am I on the right lines that it would be potent enough to play DVDs?

If so, I could be on to a winner here

I could try it out, never actually done that!

To be honest though, I can't compete against this :

I don't think I can be bothered to plug it in and turn it on to see if it does for £20!!! lol

How much would you be looking at then Rich?

+ if you could check the DVD aspect, I would be grateful, as this is the main aspect of what I want the machine to do

Hi Dan, It plays DVDs but seems to be set on R1 at the moment, I know it can be changed... Its running 9.1 too but I have found 2x64mb chips for it ( :wow: I know ) but there is none built in. The HD is a 40gb though.
