Default Security for my pc

Just got a new pc and this time I will get some proper software to protect my pc. So I am looking for some kind of a bundle that contains all the things I need to protect my pc. Is there something like a bundle?

If you go onto amazon.co.uk you can get some of these suites for just a few quid from the other sub-resellers.

e.g.

Scroll down for some under a tenner

Don't waste money on McAffee or Norton, the latter also cause havoc with your system and they are both bloatware.

AVG for antivirus, Windows Defender or some other free anti-spyware (you should use multiple ones anyway) and use the firewall in your broadband router (or the built-in one)

You should have bought a Mac but we all make mistakes

I have four things on my PC - all free and all that I need.

1) AVG Antivirus (freeware edition)
2) Kerio Personal Firework
3) Adaware & Spybot

I'd also go for that (actually I do already). Look to install some antispyware tool that protects from the outset like 'SpywareBlaster'

I am happy using Norton Internet Security.

The package comes with everything I wanted to protect my Pc from the bad guys including virus protection and firewall. The firewall was easy to setup, too - something which has stopped me in the past, but this one knows most of the programs and what they should be allowed to do.

Now the most I tend to see of the programs are the automated backups and - since I am using a laptop - I sometimes get to change the profile when i am on a different network. Great feature if you travel a lot!

The PC is still working fine. Now I am wondering if I should upgrade to Norton Internet Security 2007,though. What do you think - is it worth it, are the new features useful?

I will upgrade soon. In fact, I've been putting it off for far too long now.

It's not so much a question about the features, anyway. You can look for new features in your word processor, or your video editing software, your mp3 player, etc.

Now, Norton *does* have new features, and I think they're actually pretty good. (They are pretty much fighting against rootkits and phishing - the two are becoming more and more common these days, unfortunately.) but even without I'd always recommend an upgrade, since the effectiveness and stability of the old functions will have improved.

Norton to me causes more problems than what it supposedly fixes, and the machine slows right down.

Personally I use avast free home edition, router with firewall, and also zonealarm and do a spyware check every week. No problems ever.

Don't open emails you don't expect/like the look of. Don't download dodgy software. Don't click on links offering free stuff. Backup anything which is important. Keep windows up to date.

Most virus etc,. problems are caused by users; programmes can help but a bit of self control and thought are more important!

I wouldn't use Norton Internet Security, it noticeably slows your PC down regardless what spec it is.

I use to use Norton Corporate Edition which was better, hardly noticed it was on your system. I have recently upgraded/rebuilt my PC and I am also looking for other alternative software to try.

Every PC I have ever bought I have straight away uninstalled Norton AntiVirus.

I recommend these.

1) AVG 7.5 (a must)
2) Windows Defender
3) Spyware Doctor

Great topic guys, keep the suggestions coming.

My free 6 months trial of Norton comes to an end in 15 days (so it keeps reminding me). It has caught and dealt with a couple of virus's so im keen to have something in place.

Either, keep Norton or go with suggestions on this topic.

The only thing I would say it I have dealt with PC's at work, albeit only a few, that were running AVG (free edition) and the computer had virus's which other AV software detected but AVG didn't.

Don't know what the latest versions are like though.
