McAfee Internet Security Suite and XP
Wondering if anyone can help me with this one
A mate got his laptop infected with a stack load of Adware / Spyware and a couple of Trojans to boot
So for some stupid reason I said "Yeah I'll have a look at it for you"
His Norton Antivirus had expried so I went and got a "PC World special" and bought McAfee Internet Security Suite v8 for £25... this should sort it says I
Everything seems to install fine (I knew it should work as it's what I use on my pc running XP SP2) but for some reason the Active Shield service seems to start and then shutdown again!?!?!
If I try and re-enable it it seems to start but then disables itself again.... during this time the laptop seems to contemplate life for about 10 mins and then comes back to life again......
Anyone got any tips?
Cheers
Andy

Sounds like a virus is shutting down the process and also hogging CPU time, have you started in SAFEMODE, disabled system restore and then done a full scan ?

Hadn't tried that one, I'll give it a go this evening
I have done a full scan in normal mode which obviously picked up the stuff that was on there and consequently removed it.... is it possible that it may have missed something?

Unless you actually format the hard drive, some of these virii are very difficult to get rid of, due to them protecting themselves, it's a bit like bolting the door after the horse has escaped.
By loading up SAFEMODE, you will bypass loading up any unnecessary processes and system restore will more than likely have a backup copy of the virus in it as well.
When it does the 10 minutes busy type thing, can you get into Task Manager and see which process is hogging the CPU ?

I did notice that it had picked up one of the Trojans in the System Restore area and so told McAfee to delete it.
I have tried the above with Task manager open and running beforehand but it all just grinds to a halt.
Personally I think it needs a wipe and rebuild, but working with PC's all day I just can't be ar$ed with doing more when I get home - telling him that it needs a rebuild is like telling a Worm that it's not going to get blown up.... ie Does not compute

UPDATE: I booted up in Safe Mode and ran Viruscan - this found 8 Trojans hiding in the System Restore Area so I've now switched that off. Re-ran VScan and it found nothing this time.
Unfortunately it still won't start the activeshield
Anyone goot any other ideas before I resign myself to a full rebuild?

Some versions of McAfee used to allow you to boot with the CD which then scanned the boot record etc for you. I would also check out McAfee website as they normally have other stuff to try such as boot disks to download etc.
