Default CPU Fan Error!

My mate has a Mesh pc with a Sempron 64 cpu that was working fine but has developed the following fault.
It won't get past the post screen and comes up with the following error;

CPU FAN ERROR!
Fatal error.....
System halted

This stops him getting to the BIOS setup to check it out but the fan is connected to the correct header and runs ok and the heatsink is still seated ok too.

No components have been changed.

Any ideas?

Perhaps try swapping out the fan, if you have a spare. It may be working but not quite well enough.

May be the sensor on the fan that reports the speed back has gone pop. Cheap to get a new fan so may as well get a better one!

Mine comes up with that occasionally, but still lets me boot....

I think it's due to the motherboard varying the fan temperature automatically depending on temperature. Maybe the lower limit is set to high in the bios. It's a great feature when it works - mine runs virtually silent until I play a game or other intensive task, then you can hear the fans speeding up.

Best thing to do is reset the bios back to defaults - look in the motherboard handbook. It's usually a jumper you move over, switch on, enter bios, save bios, switch off and swap back..... Boot up again and set up bios agian.

Try another fan on it, should be able to pick one up for a few quid, I think the ones with a sensor have 3 wires.

Is the PC still under warranty? If so get in touch with Mesh first. Opening you're PC will invalidate the warranty.

This is exactly why I nvr set the cpu warning alert on under bios. You could try resetting the bios to defaults by bridging across the reset jumpers, and if your lucky that option will be turned off by default.

We had this with a pc at work, had 2 new fans but still got the message. Eventually with a bit of prompting from me the engineer realised it was some kind of sensor problem. dunno what happened next 'cos I got a new job.
