Hi chaps, i was wondering what the latest broadband hardware that NTL are chucking out to new users.
I know that its a cable modem, but wondered what connection options you get with them.
Also do they log in automatically like the BT line routers, ( with username password on routers) or don't they authenticate like that.

You enter your activation / password once on installation.

As for hardware I was supplied with a modem with usb/ethernet connections, they do a wireless version but costs extra.

Ta Bob, what about adding extra pc's / laptops via a router attached to their supplied modem ?
Am I right in saying they use the MAC address of the pc ?

If so, with a scenario of NTL >> NTL Modem >> wireless router with 4 port switch

Would they need the MAC address of the router + all pc's attached, or just the router.

Never really tried, it does use MAC addresses, however you are allowed 5 pc's to be registered to the account.

can i just ask is this to do with PID registration on your account?

loads of people ask me about NTL stuff but i've never dealt with them

Bob - cheers, I am presuming after registering a routers MAC, after activating
the account on a pc ( as well as its MAC), I will then be able to add
any pc i choose ( via the router) without registering the pc's MAC.

Mike - i dont know, is PID the personal identity ? ( guess) , My main queries
are around the hardware provided, and adding/using a wireless 4 port
router with multiple pc's, and having to register a MAC to use them on
the router side.

I was told if you turn off all your kit for 15 minutes then plug a router in, it should pick up ok. The MAC "lock on" resets itself if the kit is turned off. Not 100% sure on that though, if you use a router they should only need the router MAC i would of thought as that is the one thats visible at their end

The PID registers the modem i think, after that you can add new pc's.

I use my xbox360 straight out of the modem (about time i got a router set up to use pc and same time) and it's never been registered so dunno really.

Looking back at my last comment I think it's the modems mac that is registered now not the pc's mac like it used to be.

That would explain why my 360 works fine.

yes to confirm the above, if you use an NTL cable modem NTL authenticate the MAC of the modem when installed so it doesnt matter what is plugged into it from there on.

Ive had 2 different pcs and my xbox 360, plugged into it at various points and they have all worked straight away.

Now have a router attached to the cable modem and all devices then attached to the router with no problems at all.

If you still get your NTL broadband through the set top box then, it registers the MAC address of the device attached i.e. your PC, so if you then added a router you would need to clone the MAC address of your PC to the router to make it all work.

Not necessarily... or not in my case at least! I plugged a Linkysys wrt54gs straight into the set top box via RJ45 cable and it worked 1st time with PS2, 360, PC and Laptop, no MAC cloning required.

I have since ditched the set top box and now have the cable modem in place with no problems.
