After reading the rave reviews on the latest graphics card from ATi, I decided to go out and buy one.

ATi Radeon 8500 has just been released and is reviewed to be better than the LATEST Geforce 3 Ti 500 card (also ONLY JUST been relased).

Anybody that has used 3dmarks 2001 bench marking program will realise that the score I have acheived of 3083, with this graphics card and ONLY A PII 450 processors IS UNEAL!!!! This months PC PRO showed 20 P.C.'s using set-ups ranging from 1ghz - 1.4 AMD, and all using graphics cards based around the Geforce 2 chipset. Only 4 machines beat my score, based on 1.4ghz processors using Geforce 2 PRO cards, and the highest was only 3,762. I know with the right processor and MB, I can expect to see figures just below 9000!!!!!!!!!!

The futures bright....the futures ATi.

That is a good point.......

But the MAIN MAN at ATi has made a declaration that this will change with the new range of cards. They have released two driver sets already and a new one is due out in November.

Also this is the ONLY card that conforms to the new version of DirectX 8.1 (due out shortly).

Geforce 3 killer?

Hmmmmmmm.....

http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.html?i=1544

The Geforce 2 cards have been out for donkeys now.... It's about time that ATI brought out something halfway decent I guess...
ATI, almost, but not quite dude.

I'm not even going to bother arguing this one.........

Cheers,

Nick

Hmm, was going to get the Herclues Morpheos 3d Prophet III Ti 500 (bloody mothfull of a name!) as it looks nice. not got it yet as it was not in stock when over in USA (would have been cheaper than over here)

not sure now though.

however, I have read articles on the new Ati drivers being optimised fo Q3, which is fine I guess, but I don't play Q3, only UT, so this optimisation is lost on me.

regardless, anythings gotta be better than the rage fury pro I'm using at the moment

This always happens historically though doesn't it?

ATI, Matrox, Videologic, The VERY first Nvidea Cards - they were all the quickest and bestest etc etc - but with crap drivers and no support it doesn't mean much does it?

Would be good if this card does do well though - is a bit sad only having one real choice of adaptor at the moment.

Unhappy

that's one of the main problems with ATI, as mentioned above. I have always been willing to try their cards ( Have had a rageII, Rage Pro, Rage 128) ,but have always been let down due to their performance and compatability issues. They just never seem to pull their fingers out........
Their loss really.

Cheers,

Nick.

I tried loads of different makes now and I'll always go back to NVidia. I don't agree with the prices and the 6 monthly product cycles but the hardware is spot on and the drivers are solid, plus the GeForce4 will harness the expertise of both NVidia and 3Dfx (who they bought recently) and should be a kick-*** product.

I get about 7050 on 3d 2001. Thats without any o/c on the cpu/fsb or card. I did muck about one day and get about 7500 with a fiddle :-) but generally I don't agree with making your system less stable !

The thing that never ceases to amaze me is the "underground support" for nvidia cards. Things like NVMax, the undocumented tuning parameters/registry hacks etc. It is the real enthusiasts card imho.

ATI + ATI drivers = 1/2 potential performance of card.

On paper, the card should fly. On basic power, it should annihilate the GF3. But it doesn't. Strange, and rather sad.

Shaun - its NOT the real deal.

Although ATI did a BRILLIANT job with the flipper chip on GameCube. Outperforms PS2, and built for a lot less money.

Ex- SGI employees can't be that bad!

Question

Shaun, is there any way that you can move/get this moved to computer related? Would be cool if you could.

Personally going to wait for the GeForce 4. And then pick up a GF3 TI500 for cheaper money. Still no one has really written any games that use the full range of enhancements in that card. Technology moves to quick for this at the mo IMO. The GF2 GTS I have is starting to get a bit long in the tooth now. Just manages 3100 win 2001 mark.

P1,

Got the Creative Labs version. Known for not being the fastest, but was the cheapest. Even so, don't have any speed problems. Wolfenstein played in max res with max detail with no probs. Hence going to wait a bit longer. Quite fancy a Herc GF3 TI500 tho.

I had many issues with the creative labs geforce2-ultra and eventually removed all creative-ness from it, using nvidia bios/drivers. Reading bbs's I think many people do not rate creative as the bundler.

athlon1.1 - geforce2-ultra 64MB, SB Live Platinum - got around 5000 3dmarks if i remember correctly. Gave that machine to the wife :-)

athlonXP1900 - gef3 ti500, SB Audigy Platinum - 8000 3dmarks.

Again I got burned - this time with the Audigy. I'm having to use Win2k as XP refuses to be stable with that kit.

As much as I fancy the new gef4 I would probably end up buying a new mobo/ram/cpu and I have no other wife to give the old machine to in any event my current "oldhat" lol machine plays rtcw/mohaa/UT like a dream.
