Question Whats this socket for?

apologies for the rubbish pic but I took the wrong cover when installing new RAM and found this socket - I'm just wondering if its a possible upgrade I can do. Socket is the same size as an SODIMM and there's also a little wire with a connector on the end that doesnt show up too well.

thanks in advance.

Looks like the RAM upgrade socket for the Graphics card. Had one on my old Dell Laptop.

Wireless would be good - might be able to ditch the USB one that has 10ft of cable on it. The socket is right underneath the IR port.

RAM for graphics was also a guess of mine because of the size but there's a solid bank of pins and no "notch" like the SODIMM that I installed had.

The graphics Ram is double the size of a SODIMM. Basically you have to buy the RAM card from the manufacturer of the graphics card, the card then gets inserted at a 45 degree angle then you pus ht ecard down so that the 2 arms on each side clip it into place. Just to confirm what model is your Dell Laptop?

Inspiron 8200 - sorry, I should have said in the original post.

3 years old now - the graphics card is a 64mb GeForce 440 from nVidia.

Looks like I was wrong:

Looks like an optional mini PCI port for an optional Wireless LAN card.

nice one!

I'll have one of those I think - should I really go for the proper dell part or are these a standard part and readily available anywhere?

just hope its compatible with a Wanadoo Livebox.

Never come across them before. Maybe worth contacting Dell and asking.

We use them all the time, the one you want is a Intel 2200BG Wireless Card.

Used by Dell/IBM/HP etc... i'm sure you can find one on ebay or from dell direct.

Never used these before but selling it for £23 http://www.europc.co.uk/pages/Produc...&refId=froogle
