AppleMac and updates.
I wonder if any Apple fan can offer advice on this ?
Our iMac is now 4 yrs old and still running on the original OSX system, the 10.2.8 version. Basically it suffices for everyday use but falls down on secure pages for things like internet banking etc. We would normally try to use the IE 5.2.3 for Mac for this as most commercial organisations run the Microsoft system. More frequently now we are finding that this version of IE is too old but there does not appear to be any update available from Microsoft that is Apple compatible, or I can't find any !
We have tried Safari as the browser but this fails on some sites also.
Is the only option to buy a new OS system (Tiger) I presume, and forget the IE option and just use the newer version of Safari that is on Tiger ?
If you run Tiger on the Mac could you tell me if all is OK and there are no problems with secure sites ?
Hope this all makes sense !!!
Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian,
Microsoft stoped support of IE in June 2003, and as for Jan 31st 2006 you cannot even download IE. (full info here) Bottom line, it's dead.
Even still, as you have found some sites require IE 6.x, so it would not be much use anyway.
The Tiger version of Safari might be a bit better, it is updated. I would normally suggest upgrading from 10.2 to 10.4, as it's way better than 10.2. However, if it's just for browser compatibility, it's a bit of big thing to do, especially if the sites don't work.
So what to do? Well, the first thing I'd do would be to download firefox. I had a few banking sites that would refuse to work in early versions of Safari, but they run with no issues in Firefox.
The other thing is to use Software Update in System Preferences and ensure you have all the latest security updates and/or any updates for Safari. Some of the security updates apple pushes out do include updates for Safari.
Can you give me a list of the sites that don't work, and I'll try them here on 10.4.5 & Safari and see if they work, so you know whether the upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.4.x will actually work for you.
I cannot say that every single site works with Safari, some simply do not as they have been specifically coded for IE, and alas, they tend to be banking sites.
The sites I know that DO work in Safari under Tiger are: Abbey National, TD Canada Trust, Barcalycard, HSBC Canada. Two of those are Canadain, the others are UK based.

Thanks for all that, very quick and very helpful.
The UK HSBC site is one that causes problems, just would not advance to download the personal page after registering with then.
Thanks Markus for the offer, if it happens again then I will PM you with details.
Cheers

Sorry about this-- another question.
Our iMac is a G4 so does the software have to be G4 or can I use G5 ?
Had a quick look at ebay and there is Tiger available but for a G5, so is it any use to me ?
Thanks again

Sorry Simon, but I'm not quite with you---
Do you mean that a G4 will take the tiger G5 or that it wont and has to be a G4 Tiger disc ?

Tiger is an operating system. And as I understand it, it makes no differentiation between G4 and G5.
I have only ever seen 1 package for Tiger and it didn't say it was for G4 or G5 on it, so my understanding its its for either chip.

Thats right a full boxed copy will work but anything else normally has a sytem enabler meaning it can only be installed on the type of machine it came with

Thanks to everyone for the tips and advice.
We have now downloaded Firefox and will give it a go for a few weeks and see what happens.
Decided that we might as well go the whole hog and will purchase the new Tiger as well, so thanks for the pointers on that.
Cheers
