Default Photoshop Q!!

I've spotted a few photographs on the gallery section. Owners have the photo of their Impreza with the bonnet faded out so you can see the engine etc...

How is this done? I've got Photoshop, but I usually use Paintshop Pro, just because I know how to use it really!!!!

Anybody give me an idiots guide please!???

Nick.

Layers

Take 2 photo's one with the bonnet down and the other with it up - use a tripod so that they are otherwise identical.

Load them onto 2 different layers, then selectively erase over the bonnet. If you set the opacity so it's not 100%, then you'll get the translucent effect that you're looking for.

You'd simply open up the two differing images, and drag one over to the other.

Thus creating the two layers that you'll need to make a start.

Thanks G-star, But if I use the rubber to erase some of the top layer, it'll erase the bottom at the same time won't it??

No, the eraser, and any other tool only work on the active layer.

I've played on a bit, can select layers, but I can't seem to get 1 different photo on top of another different photo and then change the opacity.

I've tried changing the opacity of some pictures but nothing happens!! I've got V5.5, please help me, I'm not stupid, just uneducated on photoshop!!!

Getting there, but I think I'm doing it the long way around.

I have the image on the background, then create another layer. Open another image on the new layer, copy it, then close window. Then paste it on top of the original photo!!??

Is there an easier way?

Thanks for all your help everyone!!

Thanks for your help everyone!!!

Here is a quick photo that took only 5 minutes to create. 1 of the 2 photos was darker than the other and the camera must have moved slightly to create the slight blur!! Not too bad for my 1st attempt I think!!!???

Cheers Alistair, thanks for your help!!!

PS - anyone - how do I get rid of the long metal rod that keeps the bonnet up? Do I have to create a 3rd layer with somebody holding the bonnet up in a different position?

Thanks again everyone!!

Try using jpeg files and not gifs as this gives a grainy effect by reducing the bit per pixel depth to leave only 256 colours.

u need another pic of the open bay, with someone holding the bonnet up. then you can cut and paste the section that should contain the rod over the open engine bay pic that does contain the rod.

actually having someone there to hold up the bonnet negates the need for 2 open bonnet pics.

chuh!

will get me coat.
